#BenchmarkingVisit | Ms Elspeth Khembo, Director for Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST), highlighted the strategic use of assessment data as a powerful lever for strengthening teaching and learning in classrooms. She explained that following the standardisation of the National Senior Certificate examinations, comprehensive diagnostic reports are produced for each subject, providing valuable item-level analysis that identifies specific curriculum areas, concepts, and skills where learners may require additional support.
She further noted that while learner performance in key areas such as Mathematics and Literacy continues to present challenges, encouraging signs of steady improvement are emerging over time, reflecting the positive impact of targeted system-wide interventions.
In strengthening this progress, the Department has introduced a Mathematics Improvement Programme, focused on building strong foundational competencies and enhancing learner performance from Grades 8 to 9. This initiative forms part of a sustained effort to improve learning outcomes and ensure that all learners are better equipped for academic success.

He further reflected on School-Based Assessment (SBA) as a vital component of learning, where continuous classroom-based evaluation provides meaningful insight into learner progress and development.
He acknowledged that, given its school-level implementation, SBA benefits from ongoing refinement and shared best practices to further enhance consistency and quality assurance across contexts.
He emphasised the importance of strengthened collaboration among African education systems as a key driver for continuous improvement, particularly in advancing robust moderation, marking, and assessment administration practices.

#BenchmarkingVisit | Following the insightful presentations by Dr Rufus Poliah and Dr Mark Chetty, the Ghanaian delegation shared valuable perspectives on the importance of preserving and strengthening mother tongue instruction within the education system.
The delegation emphasised that learners continue to study their home language even after transitioning to English-medium instruction, ensuring that their linguistic and cultural identity remains an integral part of the learning journey. Rather than separating learners from their mother tongue after the foundational phase, home language subjects continue to form part of the curriculum alongside other subjects, supporting both academic progression and multilingual competence.

#BenchmarkingVisit | Dr Rufus Poliah, Chief Director for National Assessments and Public Examinations at the DBE, emphasised the significance of the Ghanaian delegation’s visit, describing it as an affirmation of the growing interconnectedness and collaboration that African countries continue to strengthen within the education sector. He further characterised the engagement as a family-like partnership, underscoring the importance of maintaining seamless interaction and sustained cooperation, irrespective of the time between engagements.
Dr Mark Chetty, Director for National Assessments and Public Examinations, highlighted South Africa’s ongoing efforts to modernise and diversify its assessment system, with a strong focus on strengthening formative assessment, improving alignment between educational outcomes and assessment tools, recognising broader learner competencies, and preparing learners for the evolving demands of the 21st century.
The evolving National Assessment Framework, together with the introduction of initiatives such as the General Education Certificate (GEC), reflects a continued commitment to innovation, quality assurance, and the advancement of an inclusive and future-oriented education system. The engagement further underscores the importance of African countries collaborating to share best practices, enhance policy development, and promote educational transformation across the continent.
