We ended #beyondbame with Dr Gurnam Singha reminding us that we must not lose sight of the operation of #racism by getting caught up in language. This was a really great event to be part of and has made me think about my positionality.

There is a broad public consensus on the value of ethnic data. This trumps a felt aversion to categorisation & putting people in boxes *as long as* the purpose is clear, and trusted to be legitimate. #beyondBAME
Thank you so much to all the speakers, organisers, chat contributors, and #HERAG for today's incredibly rich discussion, esp. in terms of insisting on specificity of context and history #beyondbame
An underestimated challenge in putting #beyondBAME into practice is communicating effectively with both the highly engaged & whivh is accessible to those not yet very aware of this debate about labels (which includes a lot of young people from ethnic minority backgrounds)
#beyondBAME Crucial point being made by @gurnamskhela about the slippage away from #Whiteness in discussions about #BAME. #StructuringAbsence #HERAG
As you can tell from my timeline, I have LOVED today’s debate #beyondBAME. Grateful to @BrilliantClub for supporting and encouraging me in this work - feel proud to be part of making a change. #DiversityandInclusion
Pragmatism and politics - what are the tools that we need to effect liberation, keeping political purpose at the forefront in using language, data etc. #beyondbame
Self-identification changes and shifts depending on space and context - we may refer to ourselves in different ways depending on what feels safest. Really considerate and mindful comments from @drarunverma today which I appreciate in an emotive debate like this #beyondBAME
People of colour do not identify as BAME, bc it did not come from our communities. Proud to call self woman of colour in the context of other people of colour when we are coming together in political solidarity. It’s about self-identification @Larissa_Ken #beyondBAME
Asking people’s FAVOURITE terms - acceptable/neutral/unacceptable - interesting from @sundersays. People are pragmatic about these terms. Want reasons as to why we’re using these terms - why is this data being collected? #beyondBAME
Important to have the conversation, but don’t expect a consensus. Exactly this - there is no magic answer. We make our choices re language in a personal context, how we describe ourselves is for us to decide. #beyondBAME
During the discussions #beyondbame I realized that the acronym PoC actually includes white people if you go with Dyer’s definition of #whiteness. He insists that white is a color rather than an absence of color.
An insightful discussion on ‘beyond BAME’ The contextual narrative and data homogenisation. Language and labels- could there be a balance ? #beyondBAME #HERAG
Really great point by @drarunverma. Need to be mindful with our language, without being dictated by perfectionism. Ultimately, we must be led by action and impact. #beyondBAME
We are discussing the use of #labels at #beyondbame and how they are used and whether they should be used. I wonder how we get away from the #whitegaze in determing these labels.
Really interesting breakout discussion inc. how labels feel different in different situations and over time and self-id really important #beyondbame
Fab breakout room discussing preferences in terms of categorisation - debate between needing categories for data collection and monitoring, and wanting to just allow people to be seen as their individual selves and not have to tick any box that may not apply to them. #beyondBAME
