The 2026 Army Biodefense Strategy (ABDS) provides a comprehensive framework to address how the Army maintains operational dominance in a biologically contested environment comprised of naturally occurring, accidental, and deliberate biological threats and hazards. It directs a whole-of- Army effort to integrate biodefense as a core component of warfighting readiness. [...]

Army turning to AI in its fight against biological threats
https://t.co/3wKQ3xE2OI
The Army is moving to combine environmental, clinical, logistics, chemical, biological and intelligence data with artificial intelligence to identify unseen and emerging disease outbreaks before they can spread widely or harm the force.
Senior officials who developed the 2026 Army Biodefense Strategy discussed their new approach to operationalizing security measures against biological threats during a media roundtable Monday at the annual AUSA conference.
“There’s a lot of data involved in doing bio-surveillance and sort of figuring out when that threat rears its head early enough to do something about it. And so, we are looking very heavily toward how we leverage AI to help us integrate and sort through that data,” Dr. Alison Tamasi told DefenseScoop.

Biodefence as a challenge to the global norms against biological and toxin weapons: five problems and a potential solution
https://t.co/uEQ45iOQdJ
[ #OpenSource - PDF available]
ABSTRACT
Biological and toxin weapons (BTW) are prohibited under the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), but the general purpose criterion expressed in the BTWC allows for protective or biodefence measures. Despite the seeming compatibility of the multilateral BTW prohibition with national biodefence activities, this paper argues that biodefence poses five problems for the global norms against BTW. After discussing these, the paper analyses past efforts to address these problem areas in the context of BTWC meetings and initiatives, such as a Compliance Protocol. The paper concludes that none of the past efforts has been successful in solving the identified problems and proposes behavioural arms control (BAC) as a potential solution to the challenges posed by biodefence, without undermining states’ security.

Biodefense Blind Spot: Why Washington Confuses Pandemics with Bioweapons
https://t.co/lXS20AmDFs
The next great biological threat may not begin in a wet market, a jungle, or a laboratory accident. It may begin on a laptop with a commercially available AI model.
[...]
These are not speculative futures. They are the current capabilities of commercially available systems. Yet, American biodefense strategy remains organized around a unified “all hazards” biodefense strategy — one that treats natural and intentional biological threats as related challenges, served by common capabilities. This made strategic sense when pathogen threats, natural or weaponized, followed similar evolutionary constraints. AI-synthetic biology convergence breaks this logic.
Adversaries can now computationally design threats that specifically evade surveillance systems optimized for natural pathogens, defeat stockpiled therapeutics, and exploit the dual-use assumptions that made this integrated biodefense efficient. The question is not whether integration was wrong — it was right for its threat environment. The question is whether that environment still exists.
