#BoardgameDesignProTip More about what we can learn about game design (pitching, really) from psychology; this time brought to you by Operant Conditioning. Think about pitching to publishers like I do about behaviour - ABC. No, not "Always Be Closing" (though that *is* important)
#BoardgameDesignProtip How to avoid tokenism: give characters & cultures that you are representing more than the stereotypical traits and tropes. Give them a sense of agency in the narrative of the game. Things shouldn’t just happen to them, they should also make things happen.
#BoardgameDesignProtip Sometimes the most restrictive constraints fuel the most creative solutions. Don't be afraid to set limits for yourself when you feel overwhelmed by the possibilities of it all.
#BoardgameDesignProtip Make it make sense. Using real-world analogues can vastly increase approachability in your games H/T to @dani_standring
This idea is the reason why I struggled with the video game “Beyond Earth” (space Civ). I didn’t immediately know I needed firaxite to build a Holosuite, why the hell would I?!?
But in regular Civ I knew I needed to gather wood if I wanted a shelter, it’s intuitive.

#BoardgameDesignProtip When licensing your game to a publisher under a royalty structure, negotiate for a non-refundable advance against your royalties payable upon signing. They now have skin in the game & you have a safety net if the game never goes to print. #IAmNotALawyer
#BoardgameDesignProtip all designers should check out this episode of Afterschool Dice Club: https://t.co/oERybr2d5S
#BoardgameDesignProtip To increase your game's approachability, take complexity out of the rules and put details on the components. Streamline procedural sections. Design edge cases out. Teach terminology upfront. Use examples liberally. Formatting and layout helps focus readers.
#BoardgameDesignProtip #ThingsILearnedFromAnime if someone is giving you feedback on how to improve your game post playtest, take that as a sign that your game (which is good) can become EVEN BETTER! They’re not trying to tear your game down; they’re trying to build it better.
#BoardgameDesignProtip Make an MVP (Minimum Viable Prototype) to determine if your game has promise before investing the time and effort to make a full version. You may only need a few cards to playtest the core play loop with 2-3p for a few turns, so why make 60 if 12 suffices?
#BoardgameDesignProtip Get it to the table as quickly as possible. Don’t worry about a fully realized game - make an MVP knowing you’ll make changes constantly #TestEarlyTestOften #FailFaster

#BoardgameDesignProtip "clever" can often translate as "unapproachable". Be careful not to sacrifice playability in order to keep a mechanism in a game that players don't get until several plays in. They may never make it through or past the first play if the game is too clever.

#BoardgameDesignProtip create balance to incentivize consistent behaviour; disrupt it to create those meaningful moments.
#BoardgameDesignProtip To test balance, intentionally break your game - Why do +1s when you can do +3s? #NunnsLaw or +5s? #GoddardsLaw @kgnunn @jordanandmandy
#BoardgameDesignProtip When observing your playtesters, take note of the high frequency #DesirePaths they take to shortcut your rules / prescribed game flow.
#BoardgameDesignProtip: Abilities that automatically and always get applied are much easier to forget (thus, leading to more take backs, etc.) than abilities that you have to consciously choose to apply.
#BoardgameDesignProtip If you need quick screens to hide information, cut a manila folder down in height (keep the crease, silly!) to make a bi-fold screen. If you need a tri-fold, glue two manila folders together and do the same thing! #FaitAccomplit

To sharpen a hole punch, try punching through a few layers of tin foil - thanks, @425suzanne for the #boardgamedesignprotip!
Changing how a game is finally scored can change a player's motivations - they are intrinsically linked #boardgamedesignprotip
