The UK has already lost its millionaires and billionaires due to the abolition of the Non Dom Tax Regime and now it’s about to lose its Skilled Workers too.
The new Immigration White Paper proposes extending the ILR path for Skilled Workers from 5 years to 10 years.
On paper, it may look like a way to tighten migration. In reality, it risks hurting the UK economy:
- The UK becomes less attractive in a global talent market where other countries offer faster settlement
- Skilled workers in health, tech, and engineering may leave, worsening shortages.
- Most importantly, it undermines trust many came here on the promise of a 5-year route.
An active e-petition asks the government to exclude Skilled Workers from this change and honour the existing 5 year settlement route.
If the UK wants to stay competitive, it must treat talent as an asset not as a lever in political games.

This is an absolute outrage. Farmers lose 76% of their basic payment this year and now can’t get into SFI to compensate. The large landowners will already be in schemes, so it’s hill farmers and others below minimum wage who suffer. Don’t we care about food security and nature?
