We have the first hints at what an EU reset might look like, and it's not very good. Mobility agreement: 70,000 new migrants a year from the EU. Not quite a return to free movement, but could be open to scams, and no sign of a corresponding cut in other visas. Signing up to EU carbon trading rules, overseen by the ECJ. Just like that, Britain is now subordinate to a foreign court over which we have no control, and British industry gets hit with even higher costs. Alignment with EU rules on SPS for food standards. This is a total mirage. It might make exporting cheese slightly easier, but it means we will have to reverse pro-innovation liberalisations on gene-editing, and will lock the whole country into EU food standards, which aren't necessarily any better than ours anyway. Remember horse meat? And of course the EU want to get back into our fishing waters. I am sure they'll bully the government successfully. All that for such illusory gain. Economic realignment with the EU will not be good for British prosperity, the EU's economic model is in the midst of collapse, and realignment will make it harder to enjoy the fruits of innovation and trade with more dynamic economies like the US. The most justifiable policy, in isolation, might be the mobility deal - the ski season and au pair visa - but considering the EU will likely demand the UK make it more generous, and Labour will probably not make any corresponding cuts to immigration elsewhere, it will be net-negative. Bad all around, and a total waste of time and effort.
