The Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (@ccvt_toronto) is hosting a lecture event titled "In the limbo of Death," featuring #MohammadAliTaheri, to be held in Toronto.
Event Overview:
Title: "In the limbo of Death"
Speaker:
Mohammad Ali Taheri, a former Iranian prisoner of conscience and founder of the spiritual movement #ErfanHalgheh.
Organizer:
Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT), a non-profit organization founded in 1983 to support survivors of torture, war, genocide, and crimes against humanity through medical, mental health, and settlement services.
Purpose:
The event aims to provide a platform for #Taheri to share his harrowing experiences of nine years of incarceration in Iran’s notorious prisons, including periods under the threat of #Execution, focusing on the #Torture and inhumane treatment he endured. It also seeks to raise awareness about the lasting effects of torture and human rights abuses.
Event Details:
Date: Sunday, May 25, 2025
Time:
4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Venue: Convocation Hall, 31 King’s College Circle, Toronto, ON M5S 1A1
Admission:
Free, but reservations are required. Attendees must contact [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) to reserve a spot.
Speaker Background:
Mohammad Ali Taheri was detained in #Iran in 2011 on charges related to his spiritual teachings, including “spreading corruption on earth” and blasphemy. He faced death sentences in 2011 and 2017, both overturned by Iran’s Supreme Court.
He endured prolonged solitary confinement, 12 hunger strikes, and four suicide attempts in protest of his treatment.
Released from prison in April 2019, he remained under house arrest until granted asylum in Canada, arriving in Toronto on March 8, 2020.
#CCVT, in collaboration with other organizations, played a significant role in advocating for his safety and release, highlighting their commitment to supporting torture survivors.
Event Significance:
The lecture aligns with CCVT’s mission to support survivors’ integration into Canadian society and raise public awareness about the effects of torture.
Dr. Taheri’s personal account is expected to shed light on the psychological and physical toll of torture, offering insights into resilience and recovery, which resonates with CCVT’s work in providing counseling, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care.
The event has garnered attention among human rights activists and supporters, as evidenced by posts on X inviting organizations like the UN Special Procedures and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) to attend, emphasizing its relevance to global human rights advocacy.
Additional Notes:
The event is open to all human rights enthusiasts and activists, with an emphasis on fostering community engagement and solidarity.
CCVT has a history of organizing events to highlight refugee and survivor experiences, such as World Refugee Day activities, and this lecture continues their public education efforts.
Attendees are encouraged to respect the organizers’ request to avoid replying to or mentioning specific social media posts sent to human rights organizations, as these are meant solely to invite participation.
