Not only has Imran Khan been denied family visits, phone calls with his children, and access to books, he has also been denied his basic right under Pakistani law and the jail rules to participate in weekly congregational Friday prayers. #AsimLaw

On this International Day in Support of #VictimsofTorture, in Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the world most prominent political prisoner and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are being subjected to torture by General Asim Munir and his military government.
Both are being held in what the Supreme Court appointed amicus has described as torturous solitary confinement. Imran Khan has been denied court mandated family visits for more than six months, he has been refused medical treatment for his eye, and books have been withheld by the jail administration controlled by an Army Colonel.
Even the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture has acknowledged that the inhumane and degrading detention conditions of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi violate international human rights law.

La tortura no solo es física
Es un ataque deliberado contra la mente, el cuerpo y el alma de un ser humano
Deja heridas que perduran toda la vida: traumas psicológicos, familias destrozadas, comunidades marcadas por el miedo y el silencio

Every year on June 26, the world observes the #InternationalDayinSupportofVictimsofTorture a day proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to speak out against the practice of torture and to honor and support the countless individuals who have endured one of the most severe violations of human dignity.
This date holds deep significance.
It marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) in 1987 a landmark international treaty that unequivocally prohibits torture under any circumstances, without exception.
⚡Torture Is Never Justified,⚡
Torture is not merely a physical act. It is a deliberate assault on the mind, the body, and the soul of a human being. It leaves wounds that last a lifetime psychological trauma, broken families, and communities scarred by fear and silence. Despite being prohibited under international law, torture continues to be practiced in many parts of the world, often under the veil of national security, social control, or impunity.
No justification political, military, or otherwise can ever make torture acceptable. It is an absolute violation of human rights and an affront to the principles of justice, equality, and humanity.
👉Standing With Survivors:
Survivors of torture carry an invisible burden that few can fully comprehend. They deserve not only justice and accountability, but also access to comprehensive rehabilitation medical care, psychological support, legal assistance, and above all, recognition of their suffering and their resilience.
Organizations such as the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture work tirelessly to provide support to survivors and their families around the world. Yet the need far exceeds the resources available. Governments, civil society, and individuals must all play their part in ensuring that no survivor is left without help.
👉A Call to Action:
On this International Day, we call upon all governments to uphold their obligations under international law to prevent torture, to prosecute perpetrators, and to provide reparations to victims.
We call upon the international community to speak with one voice: torture has no place in a just and humane world.
We stand with every survivor. We honor their courage. And we renew our unwavering commitment to a world where every person's dignity is protected without compromise, without exception.
Silence is complicity. Speak out. Stand up. Support survivors.

Yesterday, FIDA-Uganda, represented by our Advocacy and Communications Associate @JoanladyAmito7, joined the @UHRC_UGANDA and the African Centre for Rehabilitation and Treatment of Torture Victims, @actvuganda, to commemorate the International Day in Support of #VictimsOfTorture. The dialogue, held under the theme “𝘛𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦-𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘭𝘭, 𝘉𝘺 𝘈𝘭𝘭”, emphasized the urgent need to confront violence, intimidation, and exclusion, especially during electoral processes 🗳️.
We used this platform to reaffirm our commitment to protecting and empowering women through legal aid, civic education, and gender-responsive advocacy. We also called on stakeholders to prioritise the safety, dignity, and full participation of all women in democratic spaces. When women are excluded from civic life, democracy suffers. Together, we must build systems that ensure civic engagement is safe, inclusive, and empowering for all. 💪

Torture inflicts deep and lasting harm, especially on women and girls from vulnerable and marginalized communities. At FIDA-Uganda, we support survivors through legal aid, psychosocial support, and advocacy, ensuring their voices are heard and justice is served.
On this International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we stand in solidarity with all survivors. Every woman and girl deserves to live free from violence, with dignity and protection under the law.
