After 13 days as a named storm, Tropical Cyclone #Cebile has finally dissipated in the South Indian Ocean. Cebile has generated over 50% of all of the Accumulated Cyclone Energy generated so far in the 2017/18 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season.
In what will be TC #Cebile's final demise, the dying vortex is still exhibiting a really cool, nearly 90° offset between the vortex tilt and the environmental shear vector. It's not rare but it's not always the case, either. This equilibrium requires a certain vortex structure.

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over the Southern Pacific Ocean and found that wind shear was adversely affecting Tropical Cyclone Cebile.

Cyclone #Cebile is way stronger than assessed by both the MFR and the JTWC. The former incorrectly maintains it as a post-tropical cyclone while the latter has winds only at 40 kt. Recent ASCAT pass shows near-hurricane-force winds as the system refuses to give up.

Also, vortex Rossby waves (VRWs) are routinely generated and sheared by the primary circulation. You can see some here manifest as low-level cloud bands propagating outward in the northern semicircle of #Cebile. These are very prominent but rarely talked about features of TCs.
Pretty neat decay of TC #Cebile. High-shear environment where vortex tilt is perpendicular to the shear vector, downshear-right. This is optimal (Jones 1995) since perturbation shear opposes env shear. Reasor & Montgomery (2003) showed this config is stable under weak VRW damping
