🩸 #CEOG Study Spotlight | Managing Low-Lying Placenta (LLP): More Than Meets the Eye
A new retrospective study of 503 singleton pregnancies shows that even when LLP resolves by 34 weeks (99.6% resolution rate), maternal hemorrhage risk remains elevated.
Key findings:
🔹 LLP diagnosed between 18–24 weeks gestation resolves in most cases (99.6% by 34 weeks), yet it remains linked to increased maternal hemorrhage.
🔹 Rates of hemorrhage and transfusion were higher than general population, regardless of LLP resolution or initial P-IOD.
🔹 Patients with initial P-IOD < 0.5 cm had significantly higher rates of antepartum bleeding and neonatal acidosis—even with complete resolution by delivery.
🔹 LLP may act as an independent risk factor for maternal morbidity, suggesting the need for continued vigilance despite sonographic improvement.
