Thank you. I've been waiting to bust this myth for a long time. There is ZERO, I repeat zero proof of Chandragupta Maurya ever having renounced his throne to become a Jain monk. The entire fictional story was based on a misinterpretation of the 7th c. inscription at Śravana Belagola by B. Lewis Rice (Director of Archaeology, Mysore) in 1889. The inscription describes Jain monk Bhadrabāhu travelling to South India with his disciple, an acharya named Prabhachandra and dying there. Rice claimed that this Prabhachandra was the converted name of Chandragupta Maurya. But in reality Rice did not realize that the inscription was referring to a later Bhadrabāhu, who came from Ujjain and went to Śravana Belagola, with his disciple Prabhachandra who committed sallekhanā (ritual suicide) after his master. As historian John F. Fleet pointed out in the Indian Antiquary Vol. XXI (1892), the Bhadrabahu being referred to in the inscription was not from Chandragupta Maurya's court & Prabhachandra was NOT Chandragupta Maurya. Some Jain Digambaras say Prabhachandra may be referring to Samprati Maurya who was the grandson of Ashoka. Regardless, it is established that Chandragupta Maurya is NOT the Prabhachandra mentioned in the Jain inscription at Śravana Belagola. Therefore there is ZERO proof that Chandragupta Maurya left his throne to convert to Jainism or died by Jain ritual suicide.
