Pune Civic Body to Install Low-Cost Sensors at 350 Construction Sites to Tackle Air Pollution In a major step to control rising air pollution in Pune, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure announced that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will install low-cost sensors at selected construction sites across the city. Out of nearly 18,000 ongoing construction sites within municipal limits, around 350 sites—especially those spread across one acre—will be covered under this initiative. The sensors will monitor dust and pollution levels generated due to construction activities. The real-time data will be available on a digital dashboard through an online portal. The system will display colour-coded signals—green, yellow, and orange—indicating the pollution levels at each site. This move aims to improve transparency and ensure timely action against violators. The project has been under progress for the past two to two-and-a-half years and has already been implemented in 10 cities. The PMC is working at multiple levels to reduce air pollution, especially dust caused by large-scale construction work. Last year, action was taken against 80 to 90 construction sites for violating pollution control norms. Currently, the focus is on monitoring and reducing air pollution from construction activities. Fogger machines are also being used in the city to control dust, which has shown some positive impact. Regarding RMC (Ready Mix Concrete) plants, no immediate action is planned. However, a separate meeting will be held to discuss the issue and take necessary decisions. The Pollution Control Board has sent several communications on the matter, and PMC will review the details before responding further.
