Edinburgh’s ‘Camera Obscura’ is one of the world's oldest #cameraobscuras in existence. It provides a 360° #panoramic view of old and new #Edinburgh including the castle. @camobscura
From Middleton’s ‘The New Complete Dictionary’ 1778, we see an illustration of two #cameraobscuras, plate 14, on p3, (fig 1, fig 2) along with the corresponding description of each on the opposite page.

REV. ERASMUS MIDDLETON (1739-1805)
Room camera obscuras are illustrated in 1778 in the ‘New Complete Dictionary’ by Middleton. This dictionary brought readers up to date on the latest technological ‘machines.’
#Zahn also designed several portable ‘Camera Obscuras’ (l) for #drawing using the 45-degree mirror, and used side flaps (r) to shield unwanted light. Zahn's #cameraobscuras were the closest thing to what 19th century cameras were.
#Zahn used the lantern for anatomical lectures, illustrated a large workshop ‘Camera Obscura’ for solar observations using the telescope and #scioptric ball, demonstrated the use of mirrors and lenses to erect the image, enlarge and focus it.

CHAMBERS' CYCLOPÆDIA
#MagicLanterns and #CameraObscuras seem to pop up everywhere in history. The frontispiece of the 1728 Chambers' edition of their ‘Cyclopædia’ has at the bottom of the engraving, a ‘Magic Lantern’ alongside all the other tools of science.
#JohnDollond achieved this through the use of a ‘crown glass lens’ and a ‘flint glass lens’. This method was found to ‘get around’ and correct chromatic aberrations. Dollond manufactured #cameraobscuras.

JOHN DOLLOND (1706-1761)
Dollond, an optician, improved upon the #cameraobscura especially in the area of #lens construction by manufacturing an #achromatic lens which corrected fringes in colour and ignoring #chromatic aberrations.

MARTIN FROBEN LEDERMULLER (1719-1769)
A part-time microscopist, Ledermuller wrote ‘Microscopic Delights of The Mind and Eye’, 1760 (frontispiece below). He described and illustrated several #CameraObscuras, some of which were designed as solar microscopes to view insects.
