#OnThisDay in 1941 : Hitler ordered two battleships and a heavy cruiser to escape #Brest in Brittany to German ports to be used in case of an Allied invasion of Norway. The daring voyage became known as the #ChannelDash, a humiliating failure of the RAF and Royal Navy.

Lt Cdr Eugene Esmonde, VC, DSO was a distinguished Irish pilot in the Fleet Air Arm who was a posthumous recipient of the VC following Op Cerberus. He is laid to rest in Woodlands Cemetery Gillingham and is cared for by the @CWGC #channeldash
