Something happened in AI. Within days of each other, Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, three people competing at the absolute frontier of AI, are suddenly talking about slowing things down. Anthropic is openly calling for pacing frontier development. OpenAI is talking about coordination and independent safety evaluators. Elon Musk simply says: “Dario is right.” These are people with enormous financial and strategic incentives to move faster, not slower. So what changed? Maybe it is simply that recursive self-improvement is becoming real faster than expected. Maybe recent agent incidents scared them more than they are publicly admitting. Maybe they saw capabilities internally that the public has not seen yet. I do not know. But I find it very hard to believe that all of these competing labs independently arrived at the same level of urgency at almost exactly the same moment for no reason. Something changed. And I suspect we have not been told the full story yet.
