I’m not talking about the bougie upper-echelon folks or the bougie Black people living in their gated communities with their new builds. I’m talking about the everyday grandmothers who are dealing with real struggles in their neighborhoods. These grandmothers have to clean up after homeless people urinating and defecating on their steps. They don’t feel safe walking in their own communities, where gangs and drug dealers—dope boys—are just standing around the corner. This is the reality they face, and this is what they want addressed. I remember, about five years ago, working with a community leader when someone had just been shot. I can still hear her praying, saying, “Crystal, we’re gonna have to invoke the National Guard.” At the time, that idea felt so foreign to me. But now, I understand. These people feel helpless in the face of these challenges. I’m so glad that President Trump cares about them—about the everyday grandmothers, not just the privileged few in their isolated communities. These residents want safety and solutions, and they deserve to be heard.”
