#Coevolutionary aspects between plants and insects played a major role in the radiation of #angiosperms. #Pollination is the crucial aspect that sets in motion an arms race for plant blossoms that are as attractive to #insects as possible. Not only colors and shapes were used to bind insects to the plants as much as possible to improve flower pollination, a wide variety of mechanisms also evolved to cover the mostly winged pollinator insects with pollen as efficiently as imaginable. But this profitable connection between autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms is by no means an invention of the ancestral species of angiosperms, but already existed in their stem species as an old (plesiomorphic) character. Insects as pollinators were already used by the phylogenetically older #gymnosperms. Are there methods to give an approximate age of #plantinsectcoevolution?
