@Nath_burn Peters' emphasis on there being a relatively silent part to communication. Body language and such as a type of dialogue has been really interesting. Also, ghosts. Talking to ghosts would be pretty cool. Our readings on cinema have been pretty enlightening as well. #comm106
@Shenise_D Same. I particularly like how the concepts of dialogue and dissemination seem to spill over to broadcasting. What have you liked so far? #comm106
Going off that bodiless communication -- I wonder if silence can be its own form of communication. A sort of John Cage thing. If the relationship one has with one's dog is actually ideal: where there's a sort of silent understanding, an unselfconscious love. #comm106
Peters points out that radio broadcasters are speaking into the air because they don't interact with their audience. I can think of modern forms that alienate the speakers from the listeners: YouTube vlogs, podcasts, and songs. What else do you think? #comm106
Landsberg point on how cinema/ film makes us empathizes with characters that are not like us is a good point. I remember watching this scene and I empathized hard with pikachu. #SaddestSceneEver #MyGuyAshDead #Comm106
Hey #comm106 here’s another story that speaks to concerns over FB-as-public-sphere https://t.co/PTQjIS2LSj
This article about Facebook’s auction system, which Brad Parscale just endorsed, says that Facebook systematically charged the Clinton campaign more for ad space than the Trump campaign because Clinton’s ads were less “provocative.” https://t.co/ddFyHkfgLO
Printing capitalism created nationalism. Can I say digital capitalism/social media created millennialism aka a nationless, borderless community of tech-influenced individuals? #comm106
@jtemko18 As Anderson calls it, we are living in a period of simultaneous consumption. Online news technology makes this even more apparent. We don't have to wait until we can attain a tangible newspaper because news is easily accessible on tablets, smartphones, and laptops #comm106
Hey #comm106 this is a great example of what we discussed re: algorithmic filtering being a threat to traditional notion of the public sphere https://t.co/tl404CbD0j
the shooting, walkout protests, and gun control debate isnt on Facebook Trending at all right now
#comm106 it's interesting that the use of vowels has allowed certain dialects to advance so much. cn y rd ths? #canyoureadthis
Fun Fact: Vietnamese stems from the Latin alphabet as well, so it's similar to the English alphabet. However, a word with the same letters would be pronounced differently. #comm106
@jackie_cuddy This is a great point Jackie, I think this argument can also be applied today. A lot of people think that technology leads to a loss in intelligence, yet it has led to improvements in science, medicine, etc. #comm106
I have a hard time buying Plato's claim that writing weakens the mind (p 78). Society highly values skillful writing and associates it with intelligence. #comm106
A lecture/essay by modernist writer Gertrude Stein. It's a confusingly fun read, and perhaps seeks to imitate (with some exaggeration) the kind of cyclical repetitiveness of the spoken word. It won't make sense, and then will make so much sense. https://t.co/MCIbum05c6 #comm106
probably let Ong down because I read his piece in this little corner as I entered my "private lifeworld," instead of having him recite it to me, or having a communal reading event #comm106
I think its interesting to talk about what we consider "fake news" then and now. Before, fake news seemed to be a lot more abstract #comm106
