On Monday we made a second visit to the @MMRDAOfficial, building up on our visit a couple of weeks back.
The focus was on understanding the plans for walkability improvements in the metro station area influence zone and suggesting improvements.
Over our 27 #CommunityWalks and general visits, it has been observed that there are certain design deficiencies in the old implementation around Line 2A & 7 stations which we want us to not repeat and improve in the currently under-construction lines as a city.
Issues like: high heights of footpaths, non provision of accessibility compliant ramps, kerb cuts, inadequate pedestrian space around lifts and staircases. Bad bus stop placement. Inadequacy and misalignment of crossings etc.
We built a good rapport with the people designing these things and had a chat about their plans especially around Line 6 and will be giving more inputs and suggestions and working more closely over the design stage.
We were heartened to know the active efforts being under taken to improve the walkability in these zones while also learning the challenges the designers face working with a generally auto centric set of institutions be it the BMC, Traffic Police, Citizens etc where lane consistency reigns supreme over footpath width. But these are the very challenges that we as Walking Project are also trying to solve at a cultural, institutional and policy level and will hopefully move the needle towards a pedestrian centric society.
We hope to make a positive contribution towards walkability in our city through this.

During our #CommunityWalk11 last Sunday, we stumbled into an active fire situation, so we were curious how smoke from that would affect the PM 2.5 level readings in our AQI monitor.
The number spiked from an avg of 47ug/m3 to 211ug/m3.
Delhi's average AQI is 411ug/m3 right now!

Between August 23' and June 24' when we conducted our #CommunityWalks, midway through one of the earlier walks, someone suggested us to make them interactive in a way they had seen citizen groups in London do it, to somehow create a way for participants to weigh in. So we came up with a rating mechanism for participants to rate their perceived walkability of each route. The numbers for it are out!

We have a new addition to modernize our #CommunityWalks to great effect.
Previously when we discussed flaws in the existing walk environments & tried to help the participants visualize alternatives, imagination only got us so far.
With the addition of this tablet we are able to aid their imagination & show people possible improvements in real-time that could make it pedestrian friendly.
We are also able able to show the existing guidelines & relevant documents in real-time.
