15 months in the making, and here it is: in this working paper, we deploy agent-based modeling to antitrust for the first time: https://t.co/8DD1VTWfjH Specifically, we provide a computer simulation with unique agents (i.e., agents with different speed/privacy preferences) seeking information on the Internet. We show how network effects, new technologies, antitrust regulations, privacy regulations, and other rules affect competitive dynamics. As we explain, we find important implications for policymakers: (1) they can better anticipate the effects of new regulations, and (2) perhaps most importantly, they can better time their interventions (e.g., introducing privacy regulation before antitrust regulation does not lead to the same result as doing the opposite).
