There is nothing that excites me more than seeing how something is made. Living in India has made this feeling even stronger because craft here doesn’t live in museums or a luxury reserved for a few. It’s literally everywhere in the streets, in the markets. It changes from region to region with new colors, patterns, materials, and techniques. And I’m writing this today because yesterday I was lucky to be invited to spent the afternoon with an artisan in Bhuj, in his home workshop. I watched him create handloom fabric from scratch. I even got a chance to try it myself and understand the way he mixes colors to create patterns. He showed us a fabric hand loom 70 years ago by his family. A reminder for the new generation where this craft comes from. It makes me appreciate even more what I wear on my kurti on a daily. And that’s for me the richness of Indian craft: not just getting the final product but being able to see how it’s made. Thank you to Bharat Bhai for welcoming and teaching us.
