CRIS data has a consistent scope year-on-year, but as we’ve seen in #crashdata, fatalities for COH take an average of 3 weeks to appear with some completely missing. A reasonable estimate for 2025 for COH won’t be available before March 1st.
#crashdata Crash locations can be wrong in CRIS around the edges. Though this 6/20/2024 fatality occurred inside COH, the location in CRIS is outside city limits so this is not in the 2024 COH fatality count. It is in the Harris County fatality count.
#crashdata The Houston fatal crash on July 17, 2025 on I-10 from over 5 months ago? I just checked. It is not recorded in TxDOT CRIS.
#crashdata Some crashes that appear to have fatal injuries reported in the press simply don’t appear at all in CRIS. The crash on February 24, 2024 on S. Voss during a police pursuit does not show up in CRIS as of today. That’s 10 months ago. (Deleted 1/10 duplicate.)
#crashdata TxDOT considers a fatality within 30 days as a “fatal injury” but sometimes this is not not reflected in the data. Currently the pedestrian who was critically injured on 5/16/25 on Bellaire and passed away 5/23/25 does not appear as a fatal injury in CRIS.
#crashdata Sometimes a person is so seriously injured that they pass away weeks after the crash. The arbitrary line for a fatal injury is 30 days. The pedestrian who was critically injured on West Orem on 5/25/25 who passed away on 7/1/25 (37 days) isn’t a fatal injury for CRIS.
#crashdata Another manner of death which is not classified as a “fatal injury” by TxDOT is suicide. This happened a number of times in 2025 in the Houston area.
#crashdata TxDOT CRIS only records fatal injuries, not fatalities. For example, the manner of death for the fatality on 7/16/2025 on the N. Fwy was a medical issue and thus is not in the fatality count.
#crashdata An example of a delayed crash recording is the pedestrian fatality on Highway 6 on July 17, 2025 which did not appear in CRIS until 12/29/2025, 165 days later.
#crashdata Though consistent, CRIS data depends on prompt reporting by law enforcement to TxDOT. Houston fatalities show up in CRIS on average 3 weeks after the crash, with some taking much longer.
#crashdata Year-on-year police department counts don’t have a consistent basis. Law enforcement agencies investigate outside their normal jurisdiction from time to time. Comparing counts to prior years can be misleading. CRIS records are on equal footing each year.

@HTX_Son @emmanume #crashdata There were at least 2947 persons classified by the LE officer as either a pedestrian or a pedalcyclist (TxDOT for “not a motorcyclist”) hit in Harris County in 2024. The actual number of people hit is unknown but higher. (It may matter more when family or friend.)
