#dunvale COH's well-publicized antipathy to bike lanes shouldn't be a reason not to make Dunvale safer and less costly to motorists. A speed cushion treatment could be accomplished within the $500k of federal funding awarded.
#dunvale @HouPublicWorks removed bike lanes from the project a year ago. I expected a modified design to reduce the cost and casualties suffered by motorists, such as the treatment proposed (later canceled) for Bingle. But now, radio silence on applying the $500k of funds.
#dunvale So I emailed Engage Houston and they told me the project is not currently active and to contact TxDOT. TxDOT told me they are waiting on COH. While we wait for $500k of federal funds, Dunvale remains less safe for all road users.

#Dunvale “Engineering” solutions can get external funds. For FY 2024 Texas got $314M for HSIP, more than any other state. TxDOT allocates 10% of that to local streets. That’s the source of 90% of the Dunvale $550k cost, addressing a crash cost (economic) of $2.1M/yr.
#dunvale So what to do? In 2022 Houston was awarded 90% of $550k to reconfigure Dunvale from 4 lane to 2+1 turn, with the excess ROW dedicated to bike lanes. There is substantial evidence in Houston and elsewhere that these conversions reduce crash cost.
#Dunvale Injury crash count is 109 and that’s approaching statistical validity. Impaired driving is a minor factor. Compared to the 237 non-injury crashes, intersections play a key role in injuries on Dunvale.
#dunvale Looking at crashes with serious injuries, 3/5 were after dark (Dunvale has street lights on one side), speed contributed in one crash, and no drugs/alcohol results. Five crashes is a tiny data set ... really not enough to diagnose the high injury disease.
#Dunvale How do traffic and casualties correlate on Dunvale? Very differently than major arterials like Hwy 6 (#TX6HSIP) and Gessner (#safegessner), where serious casualties occur off-peak. Here, casualties are much more correlated with traffic. Solutions may be different..
#Dunvale What isn’t apparent turning onto Dunvale is the annual cost of crashes. The pain component does fall more heavily on pedestrians and people on bicycles, but mostly it is motorists that are injured on this road: 14% overall casualty rate.
#Dunvale The one mile of Dunvale Rd. from Westheimer to Westpark is in the HIN. It is 30 mph posted, 4x11’ lanes and carries about 12k vehicles/day. Straight, in a wide 66’ right of way (ROW) and below capacity, what’s not to like?
#crashdata We’re not going reduce the cost and pain of road crashes in Houston with platitudes and ordinances. Effective and sustained change in habits is needed. In #Dunvale I will examine one High Injury Network (HIN) segment that could be safer for everyone. (Corrected)
