A7: It's imperative that educators and advocates engage in resistance and commit to teaching the truth by avoiding to whitewash history in classrooms any further than what's already being done. #CriticalConversationsChat

Q7: With harmful legislation like this bill and other bills censoring instruction passing in TN and across the US, how can advocates and education leaders address the need for culturally competent teaching? #CriticalConversationsChat

@EdTrustTN A7: The movement for educational justice in Tennessee must include culturally relevant discussions of inequities that disproportionately affect Black and Brown students. There is no other path forward. #CriticalConversationsChat

@EdTrustTN A6: As @marta_w_aldrich discussed, some states pursued Biden civic grants while other states pursued CRT legislation. Starkly different approaches. National unity at stake. #anationdivided #EdChat #CriticalConversationsChat https://t.co/JYL0DacF7x

@EdTrustTN ALL students are done a disservice when promoting a whitewashed version of history. We must understand the forces that have created the unequal playing field we’ve inherited. This is what fosters empathy & understanding not distrust & resentment. #CriticalConversationsChat

Either way, on the heels of also limiting what teachers can talk about regarding gender/sex and LGBTQ+ issues, many educators say lawmakers are overstepping and/or are instilling fear (I just saw an educator tweet these very words over in the #CriticalConversationsChat).

Other states, like Tennessee, didn't officially name CRT in its own legislation. #CriticalConversationsChat From @natalie_allison and The @Tennessean ⬇️ https://t.co/iN28K0obyi

@EdTrustTN I’d love to ask my favorite high school English teacher, @KellyGToGo to weigh in. His classroom was a place of discovery, rigor and a deep sense of belonging as we explored Chicano literature alongside more traditional classroom texts. #CriticalConversationsChat

Thank you for this perspective @reallemueljh. Educators and students should not be stoked with fear while grappling with the realities of the history of this state and country. #CriticalConversationsChat

@EdTrustTN A4: The law’s lack of clarity creates the possibility for nearly ANY discussion about race, gender and class to be construed as a prohibited discussion. That’s why this a much larger question outside of Critical Race Theory proper. #CriticalConversationsChat

A3: It’s imperative that the TRUTH be taught in schools. This includes ugly realities of racism and slavery and the many meaningful contributions of Black, Indigenous, and POC in this country. To omit this is history erasure and is shameful. #CriticalConversationsChat
