If you have huge fiscal deficits caused by supply-shocks then you have economic crises , but there is no lack of tax revenue .

Some staggering charts, inc one showing Britain is currently in the weakest era for econ growth since 1776.
No cut spending and lower / simplyfy some tax rates that are punitive and inefficient.
As a result they are hurting growth and tax revenue in general.
Spending cuts are vital but won't happen.

This chart is a warning: the UK has suffered a 16-year collapse in its ability to raise living standards. GDP per capita is still below 2019, tens of points behind where it should be. No major economy has fallen further behind its own trajectory.
If we don’t fix this, we don’t just get poorer. We drift toward emerging-market living standards while Europe stagnates beside us. A stagnant Europe leaves the world bipolar: the US on one side, China/Russia/Iran on the other, a powerless continent in between.
The US escaped its productivity slump by building global technology platforms. We didn’t. The bill is due.
Either we build a system where generational companies can start, scale, and list here. Or we accept decline.
There is no third option.

There are over 1 million people of pension age who pay higher rate tax (i.e. have income of over £50K) & still qualify for the state pension (£12K a year, paid by current tax payers). It is a huge injustice to cut working age benefits while leaving the state pension untouched.
And here's the rub .
People who are suffering ,or appear to be suffering "a cost of living crisis" despite being supported ,by big government , is being supported by them !
The only way out is

I would add to Dilip's list , reducing the size of the fiscal deficit , that sucks in imports to open trading nations .
