Tropical Cyclone Wati spun up over the open South Pacific in the last day and a half, about 500 miles east of Pago Pago, American Samoa. Winds are near 75 mph, hurricane strength.
It's early. The South Pacific cyclone season doesn't officially open until Nov 1. Early storms do happen (Cyclone Lola hit Vanuatu as a Category 5 in late October 2023), but they're uncommon.
And yes, it spins clockwise. Every storm south of the equator does.
Some watchers are saying Wati will run west to east all the way to the Drake Passage below South America. Here's what the official forecast shows: Wati curves southeast (normal for a southern storm once it rounds the high-pressure ridge), weakens over cooler water, and loses its tropical engine late Monday near French Polynesia's Austral Islands. That's still more than 4,000 miles from the Drake Passage.
Early? Yes. Headed for South America? Not per the forecast. We're watching. π
