My #dandypunk WIP started with dissatisfaction about female heroines in #steampunk: In my #PhD, I use @mariantoinetta's brilliant research on #neoVictorian postfeminism to explore how sp Action Girls suffer from Strong Female Character syndrome: punchy, sexy, but no agency. /1
#Dandypunk is my way to pay hommage to #Ouida, but also to think about the impact of canon in collectively shared #neoVictorian imaginaries. What if #steampunk gravitates not towards 'peculiar brass gear' & 'slightly kinky underwear' (Bruce Sterling), but a different register?
To trick myself out of the postdoc/lockdown slump, I want to share more about my approach to channelling my #steampunk research into a novel of my own: Thinking about #neoVictorian clichés, canon, #Ouida, cyberpunk, transnational 'Victorians', & punking the past. #dandypunk
