The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) wishes to clarify some concerns about Airtel Uganda's payment of UGX 34 billion, equivalent to 2% of its annual gross revenue. This payment is not linked to the ongoing online campaign against rapid depletion of internet bundles and other related service complaints. Notably, the 2% levy paid by @Airtel_Ug is a legal requirement under section 68(1) and schedule 5 of the Uganda Communications Act 2013. It is also part of the terms and conditions of the telecom company’s licence and therefore applies to all operators, not just Airtel Uganda. @UCC_Official is responsible for allocating half of these funds to the Consolidated Fund of Uganda, while the remaining portion goes towards enhancing communication services in unserved and underserved regions of Uganda through the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF). @UCC_Official understands the public's concerns about the rapid depletion of internet bundles and the timing of Airtel Uganda's compliance payment. However, we want to assure the public that these two matters are completely unrelated. Regarding the depletion of internet bundles and other service dissatisfaction, UCC is working with all telecommunications operators, including Airtel Uganda, to scrutinize and address these concerns. Our commitment is to promote transparency, fairness, and understanding between consumers and service providers regarding data billing and usage, ensuring that the interests of both consumers and operators are balanced and protected. This will help to promote a healthy, competitive, and transparent telecommunications sector in Uganda.
