So much of the recent mess in crypto has been down to the “who cares about decentralization anyway?” attitude that’s hollowed out the industry in recent years. A good example of how letting go of the core principles of the industry ends up in creating gaping security flaws in protocols and exposes users to unnecessary risk. Decentralization has a cost. It slows you down, it’s hassle, it’s messy, it literally costs more money to operate. But we must do it anyway. That isn’t to say we should be decentralized in an uncritical fashion. A big part of the problem is that going too far with it can lead to catastrophic failure in the other direction. So many of the DAOs for example, simply sent control of their entire protocol out to random token holders on the internet, with little to no curation. Too decentralized. That means treasuries get rugged, protocols get mismanaged. Failure. That does not mean DAOs will never work, it doesn’t mean decentralisation is a bad idea. It means applying decentralisation where it matters. It means eliminating critical points of failure. It means distributed consensus and it means giving token holders legitimate HARD power. It’s time for a swing back the other way now. It has demonstrably been pushed too far. We’ve found the limits and gone beyond them. The security model has shifted. Decentralize, or die.
