@WarMonitors 🧬 Genetic truth > colonial myth.
Palestinians carry the blood of Canaan, while Europe whispers in Ashkenaz's veins.
History isn’t a slogan—it’s science.
The land remembers. So do the genes.

I did a deep dive to understand the topic of DNA/social justice, + I’m so grateful for the work, time & generosity of many experts on this topic. Here’s a quick run through:
1. the #DecolonizeDNA community here on Twitter pointed me in so many fascinating directions.
Unfortunately the recognition of lack of samples diversity in research studies has made diverse samples not just trendy but now even required for some grants & some 'scientists' will do anything to get their hands on samples from underrepresented/underserved pops #DecolonizeDNA🧬
I just got an email from someone in the US asking me for advice on how to obtain samples from Latin American countries without having to recognise sample providers w/ authorship in the resulting paper. Needless to say I was furious. Friends, please don't do this #colonialscience
#DecolonizeDNA "Many articles included no information on the permits granted for analysis (44%) & the custody of the human remains (49%) ..[E]thnonyms were used .. mostly w/o any explicit justification. ..only 7% of the studies exhibited some evidence of a collaborative approach"
Muy contenta de compartir nuestro último trabajo donde reflexionamos sobre algunos aspectos éticos de los estudios de ADN antiguo en Sudamérica 🤓

Happy to share our new paper where we reflect on some ethical issues of ancient DNA studies in South America
@monicaMedHist @hssonline @rosanna_dent Thanks for mentioning #DecolonizeDNA! I do not think Dr. Keele brought it up but he did mention Michael Blakey's work with the African Burial Ground as an example of using old data and the tools of anthropology without reproducing racism.
@HelenePetrou @hssonline Thank you for this summary of Terence Keel's talk (& 🙏@rosanna_dent for flagging the thread). I don't know if Dr Keel mentioned this, but the #DecolonizeDNA efforts are aimed at precisely this kind of work. There is also work in #histmed to tell new stories out of old data.
Krystal Tsosie (@kstsosie), Indigenous (Diné/Navajo) geneticist-ethicist & statistician at @VanderbiltU & co-founder of @NativeBio, shares her views on how Indigenous culture, gene editing, & bioethics converge, and what it might take to #DecolonizeDNA.

Her research works to #DecolonizeDNA and characterize the #functional, #adaptive, and medically relevant genetic variation and population histories of historically marginalized populations in Latin America and the Caribbean
From @novapbs: An Indigenous bioethicist on CRISPR and decolonizing DNA: https://t.co/FATkpq1TMG @kstsosie explaines that indigenous peoples are not anti-science but anti-exploitation. #bioethics #CRISPR #DNA #DecolonizeDNA #Genetics
"To decolonize DNA is not anti-science, and it's not a rewriting of the fundamentals of DNA. One thing I always say is that Indigenous peoples are not anti-science; we're anti-exploitation." - Great interview of @kstsosie w/ @novapbs #DecolonizeDNA https://t.co/iw8ckul5zk
"Participation of individuals from diverse groups is essential if we are to realize the promise of genomics research and the equitable application of genetic discoveries in healthcare and society" #DiversityMatters #RepresentationMatters #DecolonizeDNA #DiversityandInclusion
Today, ASHG published a perspective in @AJHGNews affirming the importance of diversity in research and underscoring the need to prevent harm to vulnerable populations. Read the full perspective on AJHG's website.

What does it mean to decolonize DNA? How do the implications of DNA and genomics affect Indigenous, African-descended, Latinx, and LGBTQ communities?
Check out the @DecolonizeDNA website for an archive of talks from this year's #DecolonizeDNA conference

Great work from @morestrada @moreno_lab and a great example on how to do genomics research in underrepresented communities. Engage & respect the participants, return results, include scientists from the country of origin! Do not engage in scientific colonialism! #DecolonizeDNA
From the start, we sought engagement with the Rapanui community and the indigenous American communities sampled in this study; we returned to Rapa Nui to personally give participants results before publishing 2/5
Race is not a risk factor -- racism is a social determinant of health; ancestry - not race - can help us understand genetics; and ethnicity/culture may help us understand lifestyle factors. But race = racism.

If your form of "community engagement" & "inclusion" is a cloaked means of recruiting underrepresented members into your research project or institution, then you are not listening.
Pls stop using these terms as PR for putting an ethical veneer over, ultimately, extractive work.
The same goes for related fields like aDNA! Bring in people who can share on their own histories and culture. #aDNA #decolonizeDNA
Dr. @aflewellen: Study is a constant process. We must constantly gather to learn and study together. We must bring in people who are not archaeologists in order to understand people's own understandings of their histories.
Interesting to see this news item from 2015 recirculating again. How much has happened since then! Grateful for the work you, @KeoluFox @kstsosie & others have been doing to reclaim genetics for new kinds of work. #DecolonizeDNA @DecolonizeDNA
RT @kstsosie While I know not all #openaccess advocates are aware of all #ethical issues related to #data governance, this is pretty good summation: #DecolonizeDNA https://t.co/7Y8VzL9MsR #governance #privacy #tech
@edmundotogo So glad you received them! Too bad it’s not enough to completely cover PA! #DecolonizeDNA
