#Deterring_Aggression taught us that war isn’t just a one-way extension of politics, it’s a dynamic, and interconnected cycle. When politics cross a tipping point (say 40% control), entire military structures—local, foreign, regular, or irregular—collapse like dominos. War becomes a "military coup" from outside the elite, not a fight for every inch of land.
What’s more fascinating? The battlefield and “hearts and minds” are inseparable. The fall of Damascus turned national sentiment overnight—no need for campaigns, the entire country aligned instantly. And those once-fierce militias? They crumbled in hours. Why? The #ٍRegime that held them together fell. The revolution won.

On #Deterring_Aggression & SNA Cohesion as Groups 🧵
📌The swift capture of Aleppo by these groups surprised many, but this was largely due to the regime’s military weakness without Russian air force support.
📌In scholarship on armed groups, seizing land may enhance their negotiating power and leverage. However, governance and control bring significant challenges, especially when cohesion and centralization are lacking.
📌My research shows these groups face structural challenges in maintaining centralized command, especially due to Turkey’s consistent interference in shaping their organizational structure.
📌To overcome these weaknesses, these groups must define clear objectives and avoid the wishful thinking that they can overthrow the regime without addressing their internal shortcomings.
📌The international community must intervene through immediate negotiations to protect civilians from retaliation by the regime, Iran, and Russia.
📌Violations occur in times of war, but the Syrian Opposition Coalition and the Syrian Interim Government must communicate effectively with international partners to ensure these groups are held accountable for any violations against civilians.
On #Deterring_Aggression: The Local and External Factors
Since the start of the Syrian revolution, analyses have often attributed events to external factors and international arrangements. Marginalizing the local dimension has consistently been a hallmark of external perspectives on the revolution and its developments.

My five strategic cents on #Deterring_Aggression over the past three days
(Please consider the green wave change in the maps):
- First and foremost, all of this, after Allah's grace, would not have been possible without the sacrifices of the martyrs, the patience of the refugees, the displaced, and the detainees, as well as the planning and preparation of the revolutionaries. May God accept their efforts and forgive our shortcomings.
- The attack followed the model of a Surprise Attack, employing the well-known "blitzkrieg" tactic, which overwhelms the enemy in a short time. The common outcome of such attacks is that their repercussions are long-lasting, and history never returns to how it was before, regardless of the results.
-In the "battle of hearts and minds" — politically, socially, and in the media — the revolutionaries have clearly won this round. The images of the three-star flags in Aleppo, Saraqib, Maarat al-Numan, and other areas during this brief period will remain etched in memory. They reaffirm the narrative of the revolution: that it is a just cause backed by strength. Meanwhile, the regime has proven incapable of protecting its strongholds and urban centers, forcing Syrians to reevaluate their alignment between a regime they chose out of fear of its power—now crumbling—and the people of their own nation who have grown wiser and more resilient.
- On the military front, it is almost impossible to halt this rapid expansion now, nor will it be easy to reverse it, even in years. Let’s not forget that it took the regime four years to retake half of Aleppo and another four years to regain Saraqib, Maarat al-Numan, and Khan Sheikhoun—all of which the revolutionaries liberated in less than 36 hours.
Back then, the revolutionaries were weaker, less organized, and more fragmented. Meanwhile, the regime’s allies—not the regime itself, which has been on life support since 2013—were at the height of their strength and entirely focused on supporting it. Now, those same allies are drained, tied up in Ukraine and other critical fronts.
With the revolutionaries gaining strength and the regime’s allies weakening, reclaiming these territories won’t be quick or easy for the regime.
- Will there be a counterattack? Absolutely. The regime and its allies will regroup, and we may see some counteroffensives. On the ground, however, the revolutionaries hold the upper hand: they are trained, motivated, and well-prepared, unlike the regime’s faltering forces or its mercenary militias. The main challenge remains, as we all rightly fear, air power.
I’ll take the risk to say that even air power is largely deterred for three main reasons:
* Before the attack: The timing was strategic, * capitalizing on a period when Russian air power, which could have tipped the scales, was heavily engaged in Ukraine. This made the offensive significantly easier, though it still came at a high cost with many martyrs on the front lines.
* During the attack: Let’s recall the repeated reports about strikes on the Hmeimim airbase. These events suggest the ability to threaten even Russian aircraft there, let alone the Syrian planes, which are less advanced and less protected.
* After the attack: Diplomatic and political efforts are underway to engage with various parties and neutralize them as much as possible. This was evident in yesterday’s carefully crafted statements directed at different actors, including Moscow, which were professional, precise, and well-targeted.
May Allah grant victory to the revolutionaries and accept their efforts, sacrifices, and perseverance.
