Devi Temples of Coastal Karnataka
Coastal Karnataka is my favourite bit of all of Bharat. This land starting from Karwar and stretching all the way up to the port city of Mangaluru is incredibly blessed. Cradled between the dense forests of the Western Ghats range on one side and the roaring Sea on the other side, coastal Karnataka is full tiny villages and towns nestled amidst coconut groves and arecanut plantations.
There are many temples in this region, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesh and many other deities. But my favourite are the Devi temples of the region. Visiting Devi temples in coastal Karnataka is nothing short of a soul-stirring experience.
Coastal Karnataka is dotted with countless temples dedicated to the Divine Mother—each one a testament to the region’s rich Shakta tradition. The sheer number of Devi temples here leaves no doubt that this was once a flourishing Shakta Kshetra, where the Divine Mother has been worshipped in myriad forms for centuries.
Every Devi temple in the region has its own unique aura, but what unites them all is a deep sense of devotion and unparalleled beauty. Temples in this region are kept spotlessly clean and well maintained, lovingly cared for by priests and devotees alike. The sanctums radiate serenity, and the air is always redolent with the mixed fragrance of flowers, sandalwood and camphor!
This region is blessed by nature’s bounty. Betelnut blossoms, fragrant kevda, radiant Aboli, delicate jasmines and mogra strung into garlands adorn the Murti of the Devi in resplendent shringaar.
The Vigrahas in all Devi temples are breathtakingly beautiful, each one over five feet tall and imbued with a powerful presence, dressed in shimmering silk sarees in jewel toned and shining jewellery, their smiling faces glowing with beauty, serenity and grace!
No visit to any temple in the region is complete without partaking of the Anna prasad—the sacred offering of food to all devotees that truly reflects the spirit of Devi’s court. Here, thousands of devotees sit together every day and share a wholesome, delicious, vegetarian meal full of regional delicacies, that cooked with pure devotion and served with humility. There is no distinction of caste, region, gender or status. It is Hindu unity at its most organic and beautiful, a humbling reminder of the generosity and inclusiveness that lies at the heart of our Dharma.
The temples themselves are architectural marvels, mostly built in the traditional Kerala/Tulunadu style with sloping, sharply tiled roofs, intricately carved wooden panels, and pillared mandapas that speak of an age-old connection between the art and devotion of this land. These temples may not have the towering gopurams or vertiginous shikharas like those found in Tamil Nadu or Odisha, but their smaller, more intimate spaces feel like sanctuaries.
Tall metal dhwajasthambhas and balipithas stands outside each temple, while a soft, golden light of oil lamps illuminate the face of Divine Mother in the garbhgriha. It is the same light that is reflected on the faces of the countless devotees who bow before the Devi.
She takes many forms, many names, at Ambalpady, she is Mahakali, fierce and destroying evil; at Kateel and Bappanadu, she is the Durga Parmeshwari, protective and nurturing. In Polali, she is the all powerful Rajrajeshwari, in Mangaluru, she is Mangaladevi, the patron Goddess of the city. In Horanadu, she is Annapoorneshwari, the generous Mother who nourishes all her children, ensuring no one goes hungry. Every form of the Devi has its own name, own energy, own rhythm, own aura, yet they are all facets of the same eternal Shakti.
It is impossible to leave the Devi temples of Karnataka without feeling deeply moved—something inside shifts each time you have the Darshan, and you carry the essence of these temples with you long after you have left.

1. Manāt (pre-Islamic Arabian goddess) - Arab
The attack on Somnath temple by Mahmud of Ghazni may have been inspired by the belief that an idol of Manat had been secretly transferred to the temple,
he wanted to destroy the idol.
