This #DisChat looks like a great resource for students in disability studies, some excellent and thoughtful responses to questions in the thread. May interest @ResearchDare & @NUIGCDLP PhDs and even our incoming LLMs too!

about PhD life & life post-PhD
feat. @AngharadBeckett & @MrJasonOlsen
We’ve received some great questions.
Please remember, the hashtag for tonight’s event is
#DisChat
Let’s get started! 😊
@MrJasonOlsen @AngharadBeckett I thoroughly enjoyed reading through #DisChat. Is this something happening regularly? I definitely need to enhance my Twitter presence, such a gold mine with many lovely people :)
If you are still reading or responding to any of the questions or answers posed in tonights #DisChat please feel free to keep going. Just because @AngharadBeckett & I aren't posting more questions, doesn't mean we won't respond.
Thank you for coming to tonight’s chat!
If you enjoyed it and/or would like another #DisChat to occur, please to let us know.
Thank you to @AngharadBeckett for her expertise!
Remember: If you're new to your PhD or partway through, you have 2 new friends in the field with us!
@MrJasonOlsen @AngharadBeckett A9. Good research. Check out the student support available from the wider university, student disability groups and networks as well as the department and library support. Having a strong sense of the channels available to you is important #DisChat
@christheowl @MrJasonOlsen @AngharadBeckett A5. certainly. I have a fantastic relationship with my supervisors, and I'm very lucky to have them! So important, but often underestimated in importance, I feel #DisChat
@MrJasonOlsen @AngharadBeckett A5. I would. But with different supervisors! Getting to know your supervisors is key. A good part of this is getting feedback on some written work. Ask for this and see if their style of feedback works for you #DisChat
A9 I tend to live by the adage, “pick a good boss/supervisor in a field you love and your likely to have a good job.” 3/3 #DisChat
A9 Being a.... “ahem” non-traditional academic, with a previous career, I am at the age where I realise that while the interviewer is evaluating me & what I offer, it’s just as important for me to evaluate them & what they offer. 2/3 #DisChat
A9 I know the statistics show that listing your disability is detrimental to being hired. However, I also never want to work where my disability is viewed as a detriment. 1/3 #DisChat
Q9. When you are applying, how do you effectively convey your disability, as a sign of diversity, when disclosure is known to be such a fraught process?
#DisChat with @AngharadBeckett and @MrJasonOlsen

@MrJasonOlsen A1. That there’s more to life than your PhD! I started mine at 23 and thought that I’d have enjoyed the experience more with greater life experience under my belt #DisChat
Annnnd I forgot the hashtag... #DisChat
@MrJasonOlsen @AngharadBeckett A7 I think sometimes you just have to create that space, and once you start asking around you soon find a bunch of likeminded people, going through similar things! Pretty much how @Leeds_DPO started: a group of disgruntled disabled humans haha :)
A8 This is a labour-intensive process but in my view it’s better to send in 1 great application then 10 that don’t address the postings requirements. Rejections will often make your efforts feel pointless. Don’t give up. 2/2 #DisChat
