@Ava_Nicole23 #disinhechat A4: we have 24/7 access to licensed counselors. Not too many schools have this option. I wish more students used it.
@DisInHigherEd A6: If there is an organization for disabled students at your school, I recommend joining. If there’s not, but your school has a DEI office that hosts affinity-group events, you can ask them to host an event for disabled students. There can be catharsis in community #DisInHEChat
@DisInHigherEd A6: If you can afford to go off-campus for therapy, Psychology Today has an option now where you can filter for clinicians who specifically state that they know about chronic illness/pain. #DisInHEChat

I ran into this, headfirst, painfully, and infuriatingly this year. Disability services advertised they were creating a “student advisory board” and I leapt. I hoped this was my chance to improve the process for future students. Spoilers: it wasn’t. 1/x
@Ava_Nicole23 Yes, there’s a real emotional toll of having to repeatedly remind and explain our disabilities to others. It’s demoralizing. The director of my program shames me every semester for not exceeding the required course load and I have to re-explain myself. #DisInHEChat
