As Disability Pride Month ends, DWI's pre-summer break chat was spent talking about rest, community and everything in between.
In a world that doesn't want us to be proud of ourselves, these spaces are vital.

This July, for #DisabilityPrideMonth we’re revisiting our Disability Isn’t a Dirty Word campaign - a celebration of identity, visibility, and pride in being disabled.
We begin by honouring Jacqui Browne - a tireless advocate for equality and inclusion.

July is #DisabilityPrideMonth! We want to thank our Disability Community Advisory Board who have been doing amazing work leading PPNNE to be more accessible in our trainings, health centers, website, & work with our patients, volunteers, & supporters. #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord

Language like this just dances around acknowledging disability. There is nothing wrong with being disabled and we shouldn’t have to centre conversations about disabled peoples lives around how they relate to non-disabled people. #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord
Last night was definitely exciting for those of us who are different and exceptional! #ASL #Deaf #CODAfilm #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord

@commaficionado We live in a society that disables us when it could instead enable us. To me, besides being patronising, the euphemisms all try to remove social responsibility & put it on individual differences @DW_Ireland ran a campaign on this #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord https://t.co/NvIVel5u09
I am disabled. Not “variabled” or “differently abled” or any other cutesy euphemism that some (most abled) people come up with. Disabled is not a negative word. Any negativity surrounding it comes from your ableism. #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord
@ludawinthesky Dis-abled is not unlike in-valid which is what people with dis-abilities were referred to. I agree with your friend. Dis-abled infers 'not able', a negative word and labelling in my opinion. People have varying abilities or #variabilities a much better word! 😁 #AbleismIsRacism
I only became aware recently that July is #DisabilityPrideMonth. Here's a video I did for @DW_Ireland #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord campaign to remind us all that we shouldn't shy away from using the word. Proud to be Disabled and Deaf 🤟🏻

Today's submission, which is the second to last in this series, comes from @nifhla and gives us an insight, not only on what identifying as disabled means to her, but also how we can use it as a framework for change.

Absolutely brilliant read #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord
"Before I discovered the word disabled for myself, I struggled silently and in confusion."
Today for #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord we have an incredible essay from @NemKearns.

Todays #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord post from @NemKearns
"I no longer had to be a barely surviving ‘normal’ person, I could become a thriving disabled person. Calling myself disabled felt accurate, it felt freeing, it felt home. It did not feel dirty."

CW: suicidal ideation
So very proud of my sister @NemKearns for her bravery in sharing this piece. It's raw, strong and so important. #ActuallyAutistic #DisabilityIsntADirtyWord #ADHD
