Now that 2024 is upon us, we are looking at the comfort @parkrun executives have in their blatant discrimination against women and girls by allowing anyone (ie men) to declare themselves in the female category at registration.
As a grassroots, recreational pursuit, parkrun is a great institution, beloved by many. Rightly so.
If walking or jogging is your limit, that's great.
If pushing yourself to go further, faster and reach for the top, you are actually penalised and ridiculed if you are female.
WRN did get an hour at the parkrun table in 2023, eventually. Raised the issues, pointed to the hypocrisy.
Parkrun have made a very small change to their policy - a man changing his 'gender identity' from 'male' to 'female' cannot now ask to have historical records changed - but there's a way to go before parkrun is completely fair for women and girls.
So in this new year we resolve to continue speaking out and actively drawing attention to the discrimination that denies fairness for females in parkrun, and in all sporting and health activities.
