FAZ tested Mercedes’s attempt at autonomy called DrivePilot, and here’s the lowdown:
The system's operation is strictly limited by several factors. It functions only on pre-mapped German autobahns and its speed is capped at 95 km/h.
The DrivePilot does not operate at night or during adverse weather conditions, including rain, fog, or poor visibility, as these conditions interfere with the performance of the Lidar and other sensors.
The driver must still take control in construction zones.
Automated driving is restricted to the right-most lane and only engages when following a lead vehicle, and it better be a truck or bus; the system is not capable of autonomous overtaking.
Certain vehicle settings, such as lighting and climate control, must be set to automatic for the system to function correctly.
The driver must remain ready to assume control at all times; sleeping is not permitted. An attention assist system continuously monitors the driver's eyes with infrared cameras.
The system will issue warnings and deactivate if it detects driver inattention, if bad weather begins, or if the vehicle approaches an area where automated driving is not supported, such as a non-validated road section or an upcoming off-ramp that requires a lane change.
Operational consistency can be an issue. There are instances where the system unnecessarily deactivates due to discrepancies between the vehicle's mapping data and the actual road conditions, such as false reports of construction zones.
Finally, Mercedes-Benz has indicated that future increases in speed (e.g., to 130 km/h) will require new, more powerful sensors and computing hardware, meaning a simple software update will not be possible for currently equipped vehicles.
