Anyway, that's my experience of #DrivingWhileAutistic. It won't be everyone's experience, but if it resonates with you, I hope you feel less alone β€οΈ #ActuallyAutistic (12/12)
If I do have to drive to a new place, I study the route on Google Maps beforehand and use satellite view to check the parking and junctions. And I can't stop thinking and worrying about making the drive. #DrivingWhileAutistic (11/12)
Then we get to parking. Reversing makes my brain glitch in a way that completely scrambles my spatial awareness so that I have no fecking idea where the edges of my car are. #DrivingWhileAutistic (9/12)
Driving at night is a whole other sensory nightmare, with a constant stream of bright lights right in your eyeballs, and having to remember to switch between low and high beams. #DrivingWhileAutistic (8/12)
If I DO get something wrong, I obsess about it for the rest of the day, replaying it in my mind and reflecting on how I could have done better. #DrivingWhileAutistic (7/12)
I also interpret everything as aggression, so if I'm being tailgated I feel like an antelope being chased across the plains by a lion, and it's terrifying. If I hear a horn blast I assume it's at me. #DrivingWhileAutistic (6/12)
But to communicate WHAT?! That I should go ahead of them? That I did something wrong? That my car is on fire? That there's a hazard ahead? #DrivingWhileAutistic (5/12)
There's a Highway Code with The Rules, but not everybody sticks to The Rules and it's super confusing. There's another unwritten code that involves flashing lights to communicate with other drivers. #DrivingWhileAutistic (4/12)
While I'm sorting out this mass of info, I'm also needing to react to incoming stimuli appropriately and quickly. On hard mode, add in some distracting extra sensory input in the form of rain/roadworks. #DrivingWhileAutistic (3/12)
As my brain doesn't filter visual information in a typical way, I see every tiny detail. My brain is working overtime to sort out what's important info (road signs) and what isn't (clouds), and it's having to do it at speed. #DrivingWhileAutistic (2/12)
A little thread about what driving is like for me. Please note that this is not every autistic person's experience of driving. My wife is autistic and is a very competent driver. #ActuallyAutistic #DrivingWhileAutistic (1/12)
Just emailed my MP regarding the recent changes requiring all autistic people to register with @DVLAgovuk Autistic people are being unfairly and illogically discriminated against by DVLA and it's not acceptable. We all need to do the same. #drivingwhileautistic
This #drivingwhileautistic thing. Where is this in the news? Google has nothing. I need facts. All I have is social media. Someone link me? Or is there nothing? When did this come in? How does everyone know about it??? #ActuallyAutistic #AskingAutistics #autism
