There's neither need nor justification for a prosecutor to put a witness on the stand not knowing how that witness would answer a question about identifying the defendant. They don't need to always have "that fear." Law enforcement interviews witnesses routinely. They can just ask. Prosecutors commonly prep witnesses by reviewing the questions they'll be asking. Perfect opportunity to vet the question, "Is Mr. Allen the person you saw on the trail?" There's also no justification not to ask. The prosecutor's primary job is to seek justice, not to win trials. Hiding from the truth because it might expose the weakness of your position is the antithesis of diligently pursuing a just result. The fear is the big tell here. What is there even to be afraid of? A truthful answer? "While the prosecutor at his best is one of the most beneficent forces in our society, when he acts from malice or other base motives, he is one of the worst." Ambition is one of the basest motives to drive a prosecutor because sometimes the just result is for the State to lose.
