AT NINETEEN, #KINGSMAN #SeanDawson HAD ALREADY PROVED HIMSELF UNDER FIRE — BUT ON HIS FIRST TOUR, HE WAS KILLED IN AN EXCHANGE BETWEEN ALLIED TROOPS.
Sean had arrived in #Afghanistan 🇦🇫 weeks earlier.
He was serving with Chindit Company, #2ndBattalion, The #DukeOfLancaster’s Regiment, as a sharpshooter in a #sniper pair.
A month before deploying, he had finished first on his #sharpshooter cadre, winning Best Shot and Best Student. His commanders believed he had the calmness and judgement needed to become a qualified sniper.
On the night of 14th February 2010, Sean was positioned with a #British 🇬🇧 force in northern #Helmand.
In the darkness, British troops mistook two Afghan soldiers for insurgents and opened fire. The Afghan soldiers returned fire, believing they were under attack.
Sean was struck and killed.
He was nineteen years old.
The first reports said he had died fighting insurgents. An inquest later established the truth: Sean had been accidentally killed during a confused exchange between allied troops.
The verdict was #accidental #death on active service.
But Sean’s story is not defined only by the way he died.
Before Afghanistan, he had won his battalion’s light-welterweight #boxing title and its Most #CourageousFighter award.
During the bout, he became exhausted, but repeatedly fought his way back through fitness, determination and a refusal to give in.
The #SilverLion presented to him was later renamed the #DawsonTrophy — a lasting tribute to the soldier who had earned the respect of his battalion.
Sean had wanted to become a soldier since childhood. He joined the cadets, rose to Cadet Sergeant, entered the Army as soon as he was old enough and quickly became one of his battalion’s most promising young soldiers.
Today, his name lives on in the Dawson Trophy, at the Stalybridge cadet detachment where his journey began, and on Kgn Sean Dawson Way in his home town.
Sean Dawson was given only nineteen years of life, but he used them with purpose.
A son, brother, partner, friend and soldier — forever one of the Lions of #England. 🏴
Rest Easy, #Kingsman #SeanDawson.
Lest We Forget. 🌺 🇬🇧

On this day in 1399 #RichardII was deposed by his cousin #HenryofBolingbroke, #DukeofLancaster. Richard is remembered locally for granting #WilliamCourtney #ArchbishopofCanterbury the charter for #Crayfordmarket to be held every Tuesday and #Crayfordfair on every 8 September.
#OTD 20 Aug 1485, #RichardIII arrived at the ancient town of #Leicester - B 4 The #BattleofBosworth. It was here in #Leicester in 1399 Richards great grandfather, #DukeofLancaster, John of Gaunt died & where his father, Richard #DukeofYork was knighted.
It was wonderful to meet so many members of the local community at Lancaster Castle this morning!

#OTD February 3rd 1399, John of Gaunt, Earl of #Leicester and #DukeofLancaster, passed away at #LeicesterCastle, which was said to be his most beloved of the thirty residences he owned within his duchy. The duchy was incredibly expansive, to the point where it could almost be considered its own independent nation.
The untimely passing of John, a pivotal figure in #medieval #England, served as a catalyst for the deposition of #RichardII and the subsequent ascension of #HenryIV. Following John's death, Richard II controversially stripped his cousin Henry Bolingbroke of his rightful inheritance, prompting Bolingbroke to take matters into his own hands and invade England. This led to the overthrow of Richard and the proclamation of Bolingbroke as Henry IV, marking a significant turning point in #Englishhistory.
The city of Leicester is home to the burial sites of three important figures in the Plantagenet dynasty: John's second wife Constance of Castile, his daughter-in-law Mary de Bohun, and of course his great-grandson, #RichardIII.
“Bizarre feudal remnant”
The #DuchyOfLancaster was a feudal form of devolution. An old law gave government powers such as #bonavacantia (taking unclaimed assets) to the "#DukeofLancaster". Today, that 'duke' is 'king' Charles Windsor.

@nomoremonarchs we dont need a royal family, they need us
