Here’s a detailed breakdown of how Indians can get permanent residency (PR) and citizenship in the countries you mentioned, plus why they’re generally more accessible than the U.S. for these pathways. #gcbacklog #h1b #greencardbacklog #eagleact #india #usa #h1b
Canada:
The Express Entry system is points-based and transparent, letting most skilled workers get PR in 6–12 months; citizenship is possible after three years of residency, and there are no per-country caps, making it one of the fastest and most reliable options for Indians.
Australia:
Skilled migration visas (like subclass 189/190) allow PR in about a year if you meet the points threshold; you can apply for citizenship after four years of residency, and recent agreements have made the process easier for Indians.
New Zealand:
You can get PR through the Skilled Migrant Category, and after five years of residency (with certain physical presence requirements), you’re eligible for citizenship, making it a straightforward process for skilled workers.
Portugal:
Indians can apply for PR after five years of legal residence (often via the Golden Visa or work permits), and citizenship is possible after another year, provided you meet language and integration requirements.
Bulgaria:
PR is available through investment, long-term residence, or marriage, and after five years of PR, you can apply for citizenship; the process is flexible, with multiple pathways tailored for different situations.
Poland:
You can get PR after several years of legal stay (typically 3–10 years, depending on your circumstances), and citizenship is possible after meeting residency, income, and accommodation requirements—marriage to a Polish citizen can shorten the timeline.
Estonia:
PR requires at least eight years of residency, with five years of actual presence; citizenship follows after passing language and civics tests, and the process is clear for those who qualify.
Summary Table
Country PR Timeline (approx.) Citizenship Timeline (approx.) Key Advantages for Indians
Canada 6–12 months 3 years after PR Transparent, fast, no per-country caps
Australia ~1 year 4 years after PR Points-based, English-speaking, easier for skilled workers
New Zealand 2–3 years 5 years residency Family-friendly, clear requirements
Portugal 5 years residency 1 year after PR Golden Visa, investment options, language requirement
Bulgaria 5 years (varies) 5 years after PR Multiple pathways, flexible for investors
Poland 3–10 years After PR, varies Shorter for spouses, clear income/housing rules
Estonia 8 years residency After PR, language/civics test Straightforward for those who qualify
Why these are better than the U.S.:
The U.S. has strict per-country caps and a massive backlog for Indians (sometimes decades-long), while these countries offer clearer, faster, and more predictable routes to PR and citizenship for skilled workers and investors.
Places like Singapore, UAE, and the Gulf states are great for jobs and lifestyle, but PR and citizenship are extremely limited or not available to most expats—so they’re best for temporary or medium-term stays, not permanent settlement.
Let me know if you want more details on any specific country’s process!
FIIDS Thanks @RepRoKhanna for championing a fix for #greencardbacklog via #EagleAct We wish it get passed at least in the next congress

I'm positive that advocacy will pay off in the new administration. With a R House, Senate and Presidency, there is executive power to end the per-country caps for good.
#EAGLEAct will take wings again.
P.S : Not interested in defeatist/negative comments, I'll simply mute you.
@AttyStevenBrown Either Trump will fix #gcbacklog or kick all of us out. Either way the AILA leeches will loose their livelihood. Remember they were the ones who always opposed #eagleact ! #AbolishAILA
Let's talk #EagleAct and #greencardbacklog real quick. Do not let last night's results stop you from doing your advocacy. In fact, it's time to ramp up. This lame-duck period is when the outgoing folks might be willing to wheel and deal since they are not concerned about re-election. Also, with changes in Senate and Congress, start building relationships with the incoming members.
@DurbinHypocrite @AILANational True , now we will see all those #gcbacklog guys panicking ! When they were supposed to act they were busy enjoying samosa. These people deserve it! I am happy that democrats are thrown out , can’t forget how they betrayed us with #eagleact #HR1044

It's been 30 minutes since I saw this news. Let's wait for legal minds to shake out the impacts. Whatever said and done, the ONLY way for fairness & justice is TOTAL end of the per-country caps thru lawmaking.
Advocacy for #EAGLEAct is paramount. /FIN
@PabloReports @RoKhanna And I spent a decade in #greencardbacklog pablo.
This tweet clearly shows your deep vendetta with IV. #EagleAct is not some entity that anyone owns. It belongs to the #Greencardbacklog community. I respect the work you used to do. I hope you go back to reporting you used to do.
@PabloReports @RoKhanna "The ration is that once white migrants from places like Ukraine share the backlog burden, Indians will benefit."
This is so untrue and made up. The rationale for #EagleAct is to look at an individual applying for a greencard as just that...an Individual. This would stop the hate
@PabloReports I am for increasing total number of employment green cards, and recapturing unused ones.
I'm saying that because your #EagleAct creates no new green cards, as you know. It just redistributes the impossible and unjust decades-long backlogs Indians face for family and employment based green cards to everyone from Africa, the Middle East, and most of Latin America. Basically Eagle Act eliminates these categories of green cards for everyone, which is why the Daily Caller supports it. If you want more green cards for Indians, get more green cards for Indians. That would be dope. But what you want to do with this bill is divide migrants against each other by casting everybody from the rest of the world into the same impossible plight Indians face, all under the asinine rationale that "when white migrants feel the pain [which you and I both know they never will] migrants of color will benefit."
That's logic is so messed up. Frankly, you should know better. And I mean that with all due respect. Because I know that you're one of the good ones on immigration. But the Eagle Act bros have taken you for a ride again.
#FIIDSUSA thanks @POTUS45 @realDonaldTrump proposing automatic #GC to foreignStudents on graduation to retain their latent to keep #America competitive We request to extend support to #EAGLEACT eliminating per-country 7% cap causing huge #GCBacklog Attn @RichforGA @RepPatFallon @Jim_Jordan @CongressmanRaja

#FIIDSUSA appreciates @RoKhanna for emphasizing benefits of GC for tech immigrants and pushing for passage of #EAGLEACT We hope you & @CongressmanRaja @RichforGA @ShriThanedar @RepJayapal lead others to find a way to lift per-country GC card #gcbacklog @PT@PTIofficial @lalitkjha @DcWalaDesi @khanderao @YogiChughSV

The EAGLE Act will benefit our economy by lifting the arbitrary per-country green card caps to bring down our decades-long backlog for immigrants. I am deeply disappointed that my amendment to include it in this year's National Defense Authorization Act was not given a vote.
