Queen Street Gardens Central. Andrew Wilson was paid 25 guineas to design it, inspired by French 17th-C landscape painter Claude Lorrain whose compositions heavily influenced the Georgian & Victorian picturesque movement. A young Robert Louis Stevenson played here 🌳 #Edenburgh

We're going to pop in to all three of the Queen Street Gardens now. First up: West. This land was used as a clothes washing and drying green/pasturage for 🐮 & 🐷/ coal yard or was wild before it became a formal garden. No 'Scotch washing' happening here these days! #Edenburgh

We're losing light now, but we can't get over the beauty of Moray Place gardens, which frames the New Town architecture perfectly 😍🌺

A note on Lord Moray's feu, while we're here. The geometrically complicated design consists of a dodecagon (Moray Place), an ellipse (Ainslie Place) and a hemicycle (Randolph Crescent). In 1826 @TheScotsman called it 'the place of palaces'. Talk about grand designs! 🤩 #Edenburgh
Now we're inside Moray Place Gardens, and typical of the smaller New Town gardens it's more formalised and symmetrical. Those familiar with Alexander McCall Smith's '44 Scotland Street' series will be relieved to know there are no signs of nudists so far! 🌿 #Edenburgh

We're in Moray Bank Gardens, designed by James Gillespie Graham after Lord Francis Stuart, 10th Earl of Moray, knocked down the mansion to develop housing on the estate in 1822. The steep banks of this garden were initially somewhat of a landscaping challenge 🌳 #Edenburgh
