Dr Penelope Wilson (EES Trustee) presents our final #EESstudyday presentation of four Delta Capitals in chronological order with Sais: The City that Overcame Instability.
The only evidence to present royal tombs at Sais takes form of a fragmentary shabti of Psamtek.
To close the third talk of the #EESstudyday, Dr Eva Lange-Athinodorou answers the question of whether there are royal tombs at Bubastis?
Some evidence has been found for king Shoshenq II and fragments of falcon headed sarcophagi, but more excavation is needed to answer this!
Dr Eva Lange-Athinodorou presents how the Tell Basta Project has used geophysical surveys to provide archaeological evidence to support the presence of sacred water channels at the temple, which were quoted by Herodotus and Papyrus Brooklyn 47.218.84, IX.7-8! #EESstudyday
The #EESstudyday presentation on Bubastis focuses on the Temple of Bastet. Dr Eva Lange-Athinodorou walks us though one of the most extensive temples from the Nile #Delta.
It features various monumental architecture, including Hathor capitals, a goddess closely linked to Bastet.
Dr Eva Lange-Athinodorou continues with the history of Bubastis itself, with early evidence from the predynastic tomb of U-j in Abydos. She also discusses various cemeteries and a palace - the best preserved example from the Middle Kingdom. #EESstudyday
#EESstudyday returns after our break with our in person speakers. First, we consider Bubastis: City of the Feline goddess with Dr Eva Lange-Athinodorou (JEA Editor).
She introduces the link with the goddess Bastet. Interestingly, the names have different etymological origins.
Our final online presentation on Tanis for the #EESstudyday finishes with some of the scientific analyses of the site and the ongoing site management to ensure the safety and security of areas such as the royal necropolis for future generations.
The second Delta Capital under discussion at the #EESstudyday is Tanis, presented by Dr Frédéric Payraudeau.
He starts with a consideration of previous excavations at the site and the religious similarities with the site of Karnak.
#EESstudyday closes its first presentation with comment upon the site’s link to biblical history and Exodus, as part of the more recent history of this city.
#EESstudyday Delta Dynasties: Cities of Power in #AncientEgypt starts with Dr Henning Franzmeier, discussing Qantir-Piramesse: The (Kind of) Short Life of an #Egyptian Capital.
He explains how this city was made a #capital and international hub through the actions of Rameses II.
It is always a great pleasure to deliver my talk on our @CAUGH_UK and @VirtualHawara work to a very special, enthusiastic and engaging @TheEES audience on their 2024 #EESStudyday. Thanks, @CCraves88 & @CommuniCuration and congratulations on joining @BritishAcademy_
Fascinating to see how @MGAbdelmonem’s project has digitally reconstructed the site of #Hawara to reunite the #archaeology with objects discovered there now in museums.
Great to have this VR experience at the #EESstudyday and see a glimpse of the upcoming Virtual Hawara #Museum!
A great #EESStudyDay today - many thanks to all speakers & @TheEES organisers. Really hope the proposals for a Hawara museum, with virtual reality links to objects now elsewhere & from those objects to the Hawara museum, can be realised soon.
It’s been an honour to chair @TheEES #EESStudyDay today.
When asked what we’d add to a list of wonders the speakers suggested Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu, and a phallic temple at Karahan Tepe. 🫣
What wonder would you add to the list?!
Special thanks to @bettanyhughes! 🤩

Our final #EESstudyday speaker, award-winning historian @bettanyhughes, examines the concept of wonder, as well as two of ‘The #SevenWonders of the Ancient World’: the Great #Pyramid at Giza and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, both in #Egypt.
I just experienced a marvelous event held by the Egyptian Exploration Society #EESStudyDay If you dig Ancient Egypt, check out this institution founded in 1882

Dr Nicholas Brown continues to cover the #ValleyoftheKings at our #EESstudyday: Wonders of Egypt.
He presents the development of tombs through time, including the founder of the necropolis. Dr Brown also touches upon the human element seen within these tombs.
After a refreshment break, the #EESstudyday begins again with Dr Nicholas Brown presenting ‘The Valley of the Kings – Its Life and Afterlife’.
He first contextualizes the #ValleyoftheKings within its geographical landscape and closeness to other key areas like Deir El-Medina.
Now, @TheeEES President, Professor Doris Behrens-Abouseif presents ‘The Islamic History of the #Lighthouse of #Alexandria’ as our second speaker at the #EESstudyday.
Starting with representations of lighthouses in other cultures and moving onto the Islamic sources of the Pharos.

We are delighted to start today’s #EESstudyday at @SocAntiquaries with @MGAbdelmonem presenting ‘From Herodotus to Petrie: Reliving the Marvels of the Ancient Hawara #Labyrinth’.
As @CGraves88 introduced, an often overlooked wonder of #Egypt.
