#Ark, #Lightning, #eltoo - or “50 shades of state channels” made with transaction constraints.
Ark construction is a form of a state channel. Unlike Lightning channels, it:
- doesn’t require atomic coordination across multiple channels - meaning no multi-hop payments, routing or P2P network (Lightning Network) required;
- can add/remove participants without onchain transaction.
This allows to escape main LN problems: inbound liquidity, on-the-route liquidity, routing scalability, privacy, interactivity.
All state channels are defined by some form of an on-chain constraint on the possible structure of transaction. On-chain part guarantees absence of double-spending under certain class of operations (matching the constraints).
Comparing to the current Dryja-Poon channels used in Lightning network, Ark (“Burak channels”, by the author @brqgoo) to be fully trustless and functional require more powerful constraints - not just a multisig but an ability to restrict the structure of the future bitcoin transactions with some form of “template”, which requires a softfork.
Another development - Decker-Wattenhofer channels (eltoo) - which simplify the operations of LN channels (but not routing or liquidity requirements) also require a softfork.

A reasonable summary of the OP_CTV proposal. My take: I find the CTV benefits weak, and want general covenants a-la OP_TX or Elements-style opcodes.
Meanwhile SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT is even simpler and has immediate, concrete benefits, and won't be later deprecated. #Eltoo FTW.
In the coming days/weeks there are going to be a bunch of people trying to twist what I say to try and project a world view onto me that I don't actually hold. So here is a thread that states my position on CTV and its activation procedure. I will update if/when my view shifts.
@RaffiKC @renepickhardt There is so much probing going on in the network that operating a node with more than a handful channel results in an unsustainable channel.db growth. Especially when running LND.

It is too nerve racking to know your funds can be swept away by a bad backup.
At least that is what's keeping me from putting more funds into my node.

2/ Read my notes to get some insight into the deep workings and hidden mysteries of how #eltoo uses taproot and anyprevout (APO). The next step is to add PTLCs to reduce on-chain transaction sizes even more. The end goal is a working eltoo multi-party channel simulation. 🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑
@ajtowns @TuurDemeester @theinstagibbs Both have pros and cons imho. DMCs are afr heavier On-chain due to the invalidation tree construction to expand the number of possible updates, but had symmetric states built in. Much of it's advantages are also present in #eltoo, without the large On-chain footprint
