🟥 ☁️ The Earth's shadow
on its surface is most visible as the Earth's shadow band, a dark, bluish-gray horizontal layer low on the horizon opposite the Sun during twilight (just after sunset or before sunrise).

▶️ It spans the entire anti-solar horizon, typically a few degrees high, and contrasts with the pinkish or purplish Belt of Venus above, caused by scattered sunlight.
The shadow is most striking in clear, haze-free skies when the Sun is 2–6 degrees below the horizon, often over open landscapes or oceans.
▶️ The Earth's shadow band forms due to the Earth blocking direct sunlight from reaching part of the atmosphere, creating a distinct shadow projection.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the process:
Earth’s Shadow Geometry:
As the Sun sets or rises, it is positioned below the observer’s horizon.
The Earth, acting as a solid body, casts a shadow into space, which includes a fully shadowed region (umbra) and a partially shadowed region (penumbra).
The shadow band visible in the atmosphere corresponds to the umbra projected onto the lower atmosphere in the direction opposite the Sun (the anti-solar point).
Atmospheric Interaction:
Sunlight grazes the Earth’s atmosphere during twilight, traveling a long path through it.
This path causes Rayleigh scattering, where shorter blue wavelengths are scattered out, leaving longer red and orange wavelengths to dominate.
The upper atmosphere, still illuminated by this reddish light, forms the pinkish Belt of Venus.
The lower atmosphere, within the Earth’s umbra, receives no direct sunlight, appearing as the dark, bluish-gray shadow band.
Altitude and Visibility:
The shadow band’s height and visibility depend on the Sun’s angle below the horizon.
When the Sun is 2–6 degrees below, the shadow is optimally positioned in the observer’s line of sight, appearing as a distinct band.
The curvature of the Earth ensures the shadow is projected as a broad, horizontal feature across the horizon.
Atmospheric Conditions:
Clear skies enhance the shadow’s visibility by minimizing haze or clouds that could diffuse the boundary between the shadowed and illuminated regions.
Dust or aerosols can soften the contrast, while high-altitude particles may enhance the reddish glow of the Belt of Venus, making the shadow band stand out more.
Temporal Dynamics:
At sunset, the shadow band rises as the Sun sinks lower, with the umbra gradually covering more of the atmosphere.
At sunrise, the reverse occurs, with the shadow sinking as the Sun approaches the horizon.
The transition is smooth but rapid, lasting only a few minutes during optimal twilight conditions.

The #PartialLunarEclipse spotted between the clouds over #Gloucestershire tonight! You can see the Earth's shadow move in across the photos taken over the course of about half an hour. 😃
