On 8 August 1919 Polish forces captured #Minsk. This crucial victory in the #EasternBorderlands region allowed #Piłsudski’s units to move the front line further east. At the end of August 1919 #Piłsudski halted the offensive and secured the area captured by his army.
While the German armies were pushing east, the #NKVD, unable to evacuate their prisons in the #EasternBorderlands, decided to massacre the inmates. On 22 June 1941, as many as 50,000 people were kept in a few dozen communist prisons in the lands the USSR had annexed from Poland.

#IvanSerov was responsible for persecution against the inhabitants of the #Polish #EasternBorderlands, seized by #RedArmy after #17September. The future head of the #KGB also directly contributed to the #KatynMassacre, as a result of which the #NKVD murdered nearly 22000 #Poles.
