Somalia’s National Army (SNA), supported by local fighters, fought off a coordinated Al-Shabaab assault on the outskirts of El-Dher town in #Galguduud region early Friday, destroying a suicide vehicle-borne bomb before it could reach their base - per sources.
El-Dher, located about 286 kilometers (178 miles) northeast of #Mogadishu, became the scene of heavy fighting as militants attempted to storm defensive positions with a vehicle packed with explosives. Soldiers intercepted the car with sustained gunfire, forcing it to detonate at a safe distance outside the trenches.
State media released footage showing troops firing on the vehicle moments before the blast, as well as images of several dead militants and at least one wounded fighter captured alive.
Social media users praised the bravery of the soldiers who confronted the explosive-laden vehicle with light weapons, preventing what could have been a devastating attack.
Reinforcement units have since arrived in El-Dher from surrounding areas, according to security sources, as the military intensifies its operations against Al-Shabaab in the #Galmudug State region.
#UPDATE: #AS claims it killed 15 soldiers, including officers, in today's explosion in #Mogadishu, which also left 12 wounded. The group also reported that the number of #SNA soldiers killed in clashes yesterday near #Eldher district in #Galgadud has risen to 36.
Abdihakim, a police officer, was among those killed in the #AS explosion at General Kaahiye Police Academy in #Mogadishu.
UPDATE: Somali National Army says it discovered bodies of 10 fighters believed to have been part of the Al-Shabaab militants who launched a botched attack at an SNA Forward Operating Base (FOB) at #Eldher district, #Galmudug state; SNA says the total number of militants killed now at 60 and that efforts to track down remaining fighters underway.

The troops are still tracing the remnants of the terrorists hiding in the rural area.

#Alshabab attempted to attack an army base located just outside of the town but faced significant opposition.
Before reaching the base, SNA troops and local residents confronted the militants in a fierce engagement, resulting in heavy losses for Al-Shabaab.
The assault by Alshabab began with the use of an explosive-laden vehicle.
