just to be clear, I’m not arguing the merits of phenomenology as a philosophical tradition I’m speaking in a clinical sense in a given moment, a person’s reality is being formed through patterns of perception, sensation, reaction that show up before thought that’s the phenomenology I’m pointing to … what is “unconscious” to many I am not excluding symbolic meaning or reflection, but more including the subtle & gross physical embodiment of the patterns … inviting people to participate in their own emergent process of self working there, in real time, differentiating experience, slowing those reactions … opens up meadows of new choices and that’s exactly what makes psychotherapy w this orientation effective

I think we’re using “unconscious” in different ways then. If by unconscious you mean something fundamentally outside of experience, then yes, what I’m pointing to wouldn’t qualify. But that’s not how I’m using it, and I don’t think that framing is very useful. What is called unconscious isn’t some sealed off domain of hidden content or mysterious influence. From an embodied standpoint, it shows up directly as physical patterns that shape mental activity and all our responses and patterns. Most people don’t notice the tactile mechanics of their own thinking, for example. The subtle contractions, the tension in the soft palette, eye sockets, neck … the way the body organizes as thought or any action comes online. Attention tends to land almost entirely on the content of focus … the thought product in this example. So the mechanics driving this thinking remain “unconscious,” not because they’re inaccessible, but because they go unnoticed. The promise of embodiment is the discernment and participation with these primal mechanics. When attention shifts away from top-down analysis toward a more bottom-up, emergent awareness, those patterns become clear and workable as part of direct experience rather than something hidden behind it. They become “conscious”
