📍 Last week (9–10 July), 🇲🇹 Malta’s Minister for Finance, Clyde Caruana joined his #EU counterparts in 🇧🇪 #Brussels for the #Eurogroup and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council #ECOFIN to discuss the EU’s economy, financial stability and its future #competitiveness.
Let’s find out what was at the centre of the discussions.
💶 First, #Eurogroup Ministers agreed on common priorities for next year’s national #budgets, while also discussing how to strengthen the #Euro internationally as a global #currency.
🤖 High on the agenda was also #artificialintelligence #AI and #cybersecurity.
Ministers discussed how new technologies can improve #financialservices and how to encourage #innovation, while ensuring that banks, businesses and citizens remain protected from #cyberthreats.
📈 The next day at the #ECOFIN Council, Ministers discussed how to make it easier for citizens and businesses to invest across the EU through the Savings and Investments Union #SIU – an initiative that aims to create better access to finance, encourage investment and help European businesses grow.
🇲🇹 Malta welcomed the progress made on the SIU, while calling for new rules to avoid creating unnecessary complexity or administrative burdens
Malta also called for national authorities to remain closely involved in financial supervision, as they are best placed to understand the unique circumstances of their own financial markets.
📊 During the Council, Ministers also approved the 2026 Country-Specific Recommendations, part of the European Semester - the EU’s annual process for coordinating economic policies and providing guidance to Member States on public finances and economic reforms.
🇲🇹 Malta stressed that these recommendations should reflect each country's specific circumstances, be based on evidence, and remain non-binding, allowing Member States to decide how best to achieve shared European objectives.

At the last #Eurogroup meeting before the summer break, ESM MD @pierregramegna stressed the importance of fiscal prudence in today's uncertain global environment, calling on governments to rebuild fiscal buffers, protect investment, and focus on growth-enhancing policies.
Referring to the first edition of the ESM's Euro Area Stability Watch, he noted that if a re-escalation in the Middle East and a sharp repricing of US assets were to materialise simultaneously, euro area growth could turn slightly negative while inflation could approach 5%.
Such a scenario would weigh on public finances, while higher inflation would push up interest rates and borrowing costs, forcing difficult budget trade-offs.
He underlined the need to comply with the EU fiscal rules, cautioning that while broader national escape clauses may be a pragmatic response, they could add to underlying debt pressures and require greater fiscal adjustment over time.
