Instead, Nigeria staggers from one scandal to another while the dignity of the presidency is steadily diminished before the world. Let me be absolutely clear: I do not support military coups. Nigeria suffered terribly under military rule, and the khaki boys must remain in their barracks. But Tinubu should consider himself fortunate that this is not the Nigeria of the old military officers. In those days, even a fraction of today’s controversies would have been seized upon as justification for removing a government and imprisoning its leaders. The accusations and unresolved questions are overwhelming: disputed personal records, contradictory declarations, the documented 1993 civil forfeiture, controversies over academic and employment claims, corruption allegations, worsening insecurity, questionable appointments, unexplained wealth, repeated trips to France, the extraordinary influence of Gilbert Chagoury, and now the continuing battle over American law-enforcement records. Not every allegation circulating online has been proven. But there are more than enough documented facts, court records and unanswered discrepancies to justify a serious national reckoning. This is simply too much for a young democracy to carry. What drives me to investigate even further is the behaviour of Tinubu’s supporters. Confront them with serious questions and many cannot produce evidence, explanations or coherent answers. They respond with insults. Today, one of them called me a “CIA asset.” My response was to spend another three hours investigating. I uncovered even more publicly available material—court documents, archived reports and records that Tinubu’s defenders apparently wish did not exist. Insults will not erase documents. Abuse will not rewrite court records. Propaganda will not answer legitimate questions. Atiku Abubakar—whom I do not know and whose party I do not belong to—has performed an important public service by pursuing legal challenges and forcing these matters into the open. More ordinary Nigerians are also overcoming their fear and writing about the controversy surrounding the FBI and other American records. That growing public courage matters. Questions about Tinubu’s true age and health have never been answered convincingly. He frequently travels abroad, including to France, while Nigerians are often left without a full explanation. His public appearances have repeatedly raised concerns about his physical condition and ability to communicate effectively. Whatever the truth may be, Nigeria cannot be treated as a family inheritance. If anyone imagines that power will simply pass from Tinubu to his son, his wife or another member of his political dynasty, that person had better think again. The presidency is not private property. Fate appears to be catching up with a political machine that operated for decades with astonishing secrecy and impunity. The walls of silence are breaking. More records are emerging. More citizens are asking questions. The old intimidation is losing its power. We must now watch carefully for attempts to divert public attention from the American files and Nigeria’s domestic crises. Political distraction, manufactured instability or new security emergencies must never be allowed to bury legitimate demands for transparency. Nigeria has become dangerously lawless. Institutions have been weakened, accountability has been mocked, and political power has too often become protection from investigation. That must end. Nigeria needs constitutional safeguards, independent institutions, credible identity and qualification verification, transparent campaign financing, compulsory disclosure of presidential health information, stronger parliamentary oversight and an enforceable process for removing leaders who deceive the public or abuse their offices. Our democracy must make it impossible for people carrying enormous unresolved ethical, financial and legal baggage to capture the presidency—and equally impossible for them to remain there once the evidence demands investigation. This is no longer merely about Bola Tinubu. It is about whether Nigeria intends to remain a republic governed by law or become the private estate of one political family. The truth is coming. The insults will not stop it.
